Introduction:

Born on 21 September 1978 in New Jersey, USA, and raised in Jamaica from the age of three, Alaine Laughton — known simply as Alaine — is one of the most distinctive and versatile voices in contemporary reggae and dancehall. With a career that spans investment banking, Hollywood acting and international music stardom, her story is unlike any other in Jamaican music. Her sweet, powerful vocals and gift for songwriting have earned her a devoted following across Jamaica, the UK, the Caribbean and beyond.

 

Early Life & Unexpected Beginnings:

Alaine's connection to the entertainment world began remarkably early. At just ten years old in 1988, she appeared in the Hollywood film Clara's Heart alongside Whoopi Goldberg — a moment that hinted at the performer she would become. As a teenager and young adult living in the United States, she put music on hold and forged a career in investment banking at JP Morgan Chase, even earning two promotions. But the pull of music was too strong, and in the summer of 2004 she made the bold decision to return to Jamaica and pursue her passion full time.

Breakthrough & Rise to Fame:

Within days of returning to Jamaica, Alaine was collaborating with producer Craig "DASECA" Marsh, and she had her first song on radio almost immediately. Her 2005 debut single "No Ordinary Love" became a massive hit, topping the charts in Jamaica and the UK and becoming the first video by a female reggae artist to be retired from rotation on Jamaica's flagship video request show E-Strip. She performed at Reggae Sumfest in 2005 and 2006, receiving outstanding reviews both times.Her subsequent singles — "Deeper", "Dreaming of You" (featuring Beenie Man), "Rise in Love", "Sacrifice" and "I Love You" (featuring Busy Signal) — cemented her as a major force in Jamaican music. Her collaboration with Beres Hammond, "Love Sound", appeared on Sly and Robbie's Grammy-nominated Rhythm Doubles album.

 

Sound & Style:

What makes Alaine exceptional is her range — both vocally and stylistically. Her music draws from reggae, dancehall, R&B and hip hop, creating a sound that is distinctly Caribbean but with global appeal. She is also a gifted songwriter, having written hits for other artists including "Tight Skirt" for Samantha J, "Automatic" for reggae queen Marcia Griffiths, and collaborating with Tarrus Riley on "Gimmie Likkle One Drop" and "Wanty Wanty".
