Bushman — The Medicine Man of Roots Reggae

Bushman - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Dwight Marvin Duncan on 10 June 1973 in the rural parish of Saint Thomas, Jamaica, Bushman is one of the most soulful and respected voices in the roots reggae revival of the late 1990s. With a rich, deep baritone described by Apple Music as giving his songs "a strong, bedrock appeal", and a commitment to Rastafarian spirituality and conscious music that has never wavered, Bushman represents the very best of what roots reggae stands for. His debut album Nyah Man Chant earned five-star reviews worldwide and The Rough Guide to Reggae called it "as good an example of modern cultural singing as you could hope to find."

Early Life — From Junior Melody to Bushman:

Growing up in the lush hill-top village of Spring Garden, Saint Thomas, Dwight Duncan was raised as a Rasta from the age of two. He attended Lysson All Age School where his music teacher recognised and nurtured his gift, and later Yallas High School where he sang in the school choir and the New Testament Church of God Choir — earning the nickname "Ark Angel" from his congregation. As a teenager he became the selector for the Black Star Line sound system, performing under the name Junior Melody.

His journey to the studios of Kingston was a hard one — a seventy-mile return trip which he would often complete by hitchhiking, sharing a bun and a bag juice with friends brave enough to make the journey with him. His persistence paid off when, during an impromptu football game at Arrows Dubplate Studio, he met legendary production duo Steely & Clevie. Impressed by his voice, they invited him to Studio 2000. Steely suggested changing his name from Junior Melody to Bushman — and when Duncan researched the word, discovering it was an African term for "Medicine Man", he embraced it completely.

Breakthrough & Rise to Fame:

His debut single "Call The Hearse" was a huge hit in Jamaica and England, leading to his acclaimed first album Nyah Man Chant (1997) on Greensleeves Records. The album was praised universally and earned its place as a Greensleeves Reggae Classic. He next worked with King Jammy — one of Jamaica's greatest producers — on Total Commitment (1999), a record that entered the US album charts at number 7 just seven weeks after release and reached number 1 in Finland. Higher Ground followed in 2001, featuring the celebrated saxophonist Dean Fraser.

Throughout his career Bushman has remained adamantly committed to cultural and conscious roots material — resisting the slacker side of contemporary dancehall and earning deep respect from roots purists worldwide. He cites Bob Marley, Dennis Brown and Luciano as his dominant influences and counts Luciano among his closest friends in the music.
