Chaka Demus & Pliers — Murder She Wrote
Introduction:
Chaka Demus & Pliers are one of the most successful duos in the entire history of Jamaican music — and one of the most commercially triumphant reggae acts ever to emerge from the island. Made up of deejay Chaka Demus (born John Taylor, Kingston, 1963) and singer Pliers (born Everton Bonner, Kingston, 1963), they became the first Jamaican act to place three consecutive singles in the UK Top Five, the first Jamaican act to top the UK Singles Chart in eight years, and creators of one of the most sampled reggae songs of all time — "Murder She Wrote". Their 1994 album Tease Me spent two weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart and went Gold, selling over half a million copies.
Two Journeys, One Sound:
Both artists had established themselves individually before the partnership. Chaka Demus grew up in the Waterhouse district of Kingston, became a regular attendee at Kingston dances and was given his break by Prince Jammy on his sound system. His first hit came through a 1986 duet with Admiral Bailey, "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer", and he went on to collaborate with Yellowman before developing his own hard-edged toasting style. Pliers — the older brother of roots reggae artist Richie Spice — built his reputation as a soulful vocalist working with producers including King Jammy and King Tubby. He had recorded a solo version of "Bam Bam" before the duo joined forces.
The two were brought together in 1991 by legendary production duo Sly & Robbie, who immediately recognised the chemistry between Chaka Demus's raw, streetwise toasting and Pliers's warm, melodic singing. The pairing was electrifying from the start.

Tease Me & Global Domination:
After early Jamaican releases in 1992, the pair signed to Mango Records (distributed by Island) and recorded the landmark album Tease Me — produced entirely by Sly & Robbie. The album spawned six UK Top 40 hits: "Tease Me" (UK number 3), "She Don't Let Nobody" (a Curtis Mayfield cover), "Twist and Shout" (with Jack Radics and the Taxi Gang, UK number 1), "Murder She Wrote", "I Wanna Be Your Man" and "Gal Wine". "Murder She Wrote" — built on the iconic Bam Bam riddim — has since been sampled or interpolated over 50 times by artists including French Montana, Omarion, Pitbull and Daddy Yankee. When actress Angela Lansbury first heard it in 2019 she said: "Oh, reggae! I'm thrilled to be part of reggae."
In January 1994 they became the first Jamaican act in eight years to top the UK Singles Chart with "Twist and Shout." The re-released Tease Me album simultaneously hit number one on the UK Albums Chart. In 2007 they performed "Murder She Wrote" alongside Alicia Keys at the American Music Awards.
