Don Campbell & Mikey Spice — Two Voices of Lovers Rock

Don Campbell & Mikey Spice - The Best Of - Back To Back (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Don Campbell and Mikey Spice are two of the most cherished and gifted lovers rock and reggae vocalists of their generation — Don from north-west London, born to Jamaican parents and raised in the UK reggae heartland; Mikey from Kingston, Jamaica, a multi-instrumentalist vocalist whose soulful, Lou Rawls-like voice made him one of the 1990s' most beloved reggae singers. Together on Back to Back they represent the breadth and beauty of reggae's romantic tradition — from the British lovers rock scene that produced Don's honey-rich chart toppers, to the roots and soul foundations that underpinned Mikey's Jamaican classics.

Don Campbell:

Born to Jamaican parents in north-west London, Don Campbell was drawn to music from a very early age — a talented multi-instrumentalist (rhythm guitar, drums, bass and piano), songwriter and producer as well as a vocalist of remarkable warmth and smoothness. His early career saw him as lead vocalist of the Undivided Roots band alongside Carlton 'Bubblers' Ogilvie, and he played drums on foundational UK reggae recordings including Bim Sherman's Across the Red Sea and the first Dub Syndicate album The Pounding System (1982). He also drummed on the Singers and Players album Staggering Heights (1983).

His solo breakthrough came in 1993 when the single "See It In Your Eyes" — recorded with Trevor T of Juggling Records — held the number one position on the UK reggae charts for eleven consecutive weeks. His debut album The Album arrived in May 1994, the same year he collected four awards at the British Reggae Industry Awards: Best New Comer, Best Male Vocalist, Best Singer and Best Songwriter. At the 1995 Black Music Awards he won Best Reggae Soloist and Best Reggae Single. In 1996 his collaboration with General Saint on a reggae cover of Neil Sedaka's "Oh Carol" was number one in South East Asia. His 2000 reggae version of Gabrielle's "Rise" was another UK reggae hit.

Mikey Spice:

Born Michael Theophilus Johnson on 21 July 1965 in Kingston, Jamaica, Mikey Spice is one of reggae's most remarkable multi-instrumental talents. He began singing in his father's church at the age of seven, and by thirteen had mastered guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, piano, saxophone, flute and harp — eventually becoming proficient in 22 instruments in total, making him one of the most musically complete artists Jamaica has produced. His voice — deep, smooth and soulful — was frequently compared to American legend Lou Rawls.

After building his reputation through live work with various Jamaican bands, his show-stopping 1993 performance at Reggae Sunsplash alongside Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs and Freddie McGregor announced him to the world. His debut album Happiness (1995) on RAS Records established him immediately, and he was voted Best New Artist and Song of the Year that year. Number one in Miami for three months and number one in London — his reach was genuinely transatlantic. His best-known track, a reggae cover of Barry White's "Practice What You Preach", became a lovers rock standard. His 1997 VP Records album Harder Than Before was produced by Mikey himself and cemented his status as both performer and producer.
