Luciano — The Messenger
Introduction:
Born Jepther Washington McClymont on 20 October 1964 in Davyton, Manchester Parish, Jamaica, Luciano — known throughout the reggae world as The Messenger — is one of the most important, principled and prolific conscious roots reggae singers of the post-Bob Marley era. AllMusic calls him a "devout Rastafarian whose rootsy reggae made him an iconoclastic reggae star in the 1990s." In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked him at number 143 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. He has released over 40 albums, been Grammy nominated twice, received the Order of Distinction from the Jamaican government, been given the Key to Kansas City, and had a day officially named after him in Hartford, Connecticut. His baritone voice — dubbed Luciano in comparison to the soaring range of opera legend Luciano Pavarotti — is one of the most recognisable and beloved in reggae music.
Manchester Roots & The Rasta Renaissance:
Raised as the seventh of nine children in a strict Adventist family in rural Manchester Parish, Luciano was shaped from childhood by gospel, spirituality and a deep love for the music of Dennis Brown, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. He began recording in 1992, initially working with producer Freddie McGregor on the Big Ship label — scoring a UK reggae number one with a cover of "Shake It Up Tonight" in 1993. His partnership with producer Philip "Fattis" Burrell and the Xterminator label transformed his career. His 1993 album Moving Up on Xterminator was critically acclaimed. His 1995 Island Jamaica album Where There Is Life — with its Jamaica number one "It's Me Again Jah" and the stunning title track — placed him at the very centre of the "Rasta Renaissance" that was pulling dancehall back towards conscious roots.
After Garnett Silk's death in December 1994, the reggae community looked to Luciano to carry the torch. Of Silk he said: "Garnett was more like a brother, a father, a tutor, a forerunner. When he moved on I knew the work for me became harder still." He rose to that calling completely. His 1996 Island Jamaica album Messenger — whose title has defined his public identity ever since — and his 1999 Xterminator collection Sweep Over My Soul are considered among the finest conscious reggae albums of their decade.
