Shabba Ranks — Mr Loverman

Shabba Ranks - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Rexton Rawlston Fernando Gordon on 17 January 1966 in Sturge Town, Saint Ann, Jamaica — the same parish as Bob Marley — Shabba Ranks is the Dancehall Emperor: the first reggae artist ever to win back-to-back Grammy Awards, and the artist who brought hardcore Jamaican dancehall to the global mainstream in the early 1990s. Mentored by DJ Josey Wales and shaped by the Kingston sound system wars of the 1980s, he became the world's most popular dancehall toaster under his own name after a decade of work beginning as Co-Pilot on the Roots Melody sound system. His 1991 Epic Records album As Raw as Ever won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album. The 1992 follow-up X-tra Naked — featuring "Mr. Loverman", "Ting-A-Ling", "Slow and Sexy" with Johnny Gill and a duet with Queen Latifah — won it again. His riddim "Dem Bow" from his 1990 album Just Reality, produced by Bobby Digital, became so popular in Puerto Rico that early Puerto Rican reggaeton was simply known as Dembow. He collaborated with Maxi Priest, KRS-One, Chubb Rock and Chuck Berry. AllMusic has called him "arguably the most popular dancehall toaster in the world" during his peak years.

Seaview Gardens to Sound System Royalty:

Growing up in Seaview Gardens, Kingston — a community he would remain loyal to throughout his career — Rexton Gordon was shaped by the sound systems that ran through the night in his neighbourhood. He began toasting as a teenager, first on Roots Melody and then Turbo Charge sound systems, working alongside Admiral Bailey. Naming himself Shabba — after an African king — and Ranks — to signal his position at the top of the deejay hierarchy — he caught the attention of Josey Wales, who introduced him to King Jammy's studio. Early recordings there brought him into contact with producer Bobby "Digital" Dixon, and when Digital left King Jammy to launch his own Digital B label in 1989, Shabba went with him. The resulting string of recordings — "Wicked Inna Bed", "Trailer Load a Girls", "Needle Eye Punany", "Dem Bow" — made him a superstar in Jamaica. His international career accelerated through Epic Records and reached its zenith when consecutive Grammy victories confirmed what Jamaican dancehall fans already knew: there was no one bigger.

His Sting stage confrontation with Ninjaman in 1990 — a rivalry that ran through multiple concerts and sound clashes — became one of the defining rivalries of dancehall's golden age. His "Mr. Loverman" became his biggest international crossover hit. He contributed a reggae version of Sly and the Family Stone's "Family Affair" to the Addams Family Values soundtrack in 1993. He paved the way for Sean Paul, Beenie Man and Shaggy to achieve global mainstream success.
