Tanya Stephens — Gangsta Blues

Tanya Stephens - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Vivienne Tanya Stephenson on 2 July 1973 in Richmond, Saint Mary, Jamaica, Tanya Stephens is one of the most original, outspoken and lyrically gifted singer-deejays in the history of reggae — a woman who used music to have conversations that nobody in Jamaican music had dared have before her. The Washington Post proclaimed her and Lady Saw "the top female artists in Jamaica" in 1998. Her 1996 Dave Kelly-produced single "Yuh Nuh Ready Fi Dis Yet" — a defiantly feminist and sex-positive anthem — immediately established her as a national figure and was included on the Reggae Gold 1997 compilation. Her 2004 album Gangsta Blues was critically acclaimed worldwide, containing the deeply emotive "It's a Pity" — built over Gregory Isaacs' Night Nurse instrumental — which has accumulated over 93 million Spotify streams. Her 2006 album Rebelution included "These Streets", which topped charts across the Caribbean for over four weeks on the Tempo network. She has sued Lil' Kim for plagiarism, spoken out against homophobia at the University of the West Indies, won a JaRIA songwriting award, studied for a Business Management degree at the University of Sunderland, and founded her own Tarantula Records in 2004.

Saint Mary, Shocking Vibes & Speaking the Unspeakable:

Vivienne Stephenson grew up in Saint Mary and Saint Ann, attending Zion Hill and Ocho Rios primary schools before Saint Mary High. She began recording as a teenager at the Grove Music Recording Studio in Ocho Rios in 1989, for producers Barry O'Hare and Stephen Stewart — a studio that later became the birthplace of Irie FM radio. Moving to Kingston to be closer to the studios, she worked her way through Shocking Vibes Productions, Bobby Digital, Dave Kelly and Philip "Fatis" Burrell's Xterminator Records. Her 1994 debut album Big Things a Gwaan — featuring Yami Bolo on a cover of Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" — was a first step. Too Hype (1997) followed. Then came "Yuh Nuh Ready Fi Dis Yet" and the beginning of national recognition.

Her career took an unexpected detour in 2001 when she relocated to Sweden and signed with Warner Music Sweden, recording the pop-inflected Sintoxicated. The Swedish experiment was brief. Back in Jamaica she reconnected with her roots, recording a stream of hits that became Gangsta Blues (2004, Tarantula/VP Records) — the album that introduced her to the world at large, featuring "It's a Pity", "Gangsta Blues" and "Yuh Haffi Ready". Rebelution (2006) continued the momentum with "These Streets", "Cherry Brandy" and "Damn You". Her most recent album Infallible (2010) was given away free for over a year as a statement about music, commerce and artistic integrity.
