Tony Rebel — Fresh Vegetable
Introduction:
Born Patrick George Anthony Barrett on 15 January 1962 in Manchester Parish, Jamaica, Tony Rebel is one of the most important cultural deejays in the history of reggae — a Rastafarian singjay whose pioneering blend of roots consciousness with dancehall rhythms helped redirect Jamaica's music away from pure slackness and back toward upliftment at a critical moment in the early 1990s. He began as a singer on Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion sound system, working under the names Papa Tony and Tony Ranking, before his 1990 Penthouse hit "Fresh Vegetable" — produced by Donovan Germain — established his singjay style nationally. His 1993 Columbia Records album Vibes of the Times gave him international reach. He founded his own Flames Productions label and record company in 1994. That same year he founded Rebel Salute — one of Jamaica's most beloved and culturally significant annual music festivals, held every January on his birthday, dedicated to roots reggae, healthy living and cultural consciousness. He has received Grammy certificates for his contributions to nominated projects. He endorsed and mentored Garnett Silk, Queen Ifrica and Ras Shiloh in their careers. In 2025 he received two official Grammy certificates from the Recording Academy for his contributions to Grammy-nominated reggae projects.
Manchester Parish, Penthouse & Rebel Salute:
Patrick Barrett grew up in Manchester Parish absorbing the values of Rastafarianism from his family and the dancehall energy of Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion sound system from the street. His earliest performing names — Papa Tony, Tony Ranking — reflected a singer's ambition rather than a deejay's swagger, but his natural instinct for riding a rhythm and layering melody over it produced the singjay style that became his signature. He released "Casino" for MGB Records in 1988 and worked the dancehall circuit persistently before finding his home at Donovan Germain's Penthouse label — the same imprint that launched Buju Banton and Terror Fabulous. "Fresh Vegetable" (1990) was the breakthrough: a hit that demonstrated conscious, culturally aware dancehall could compete commercially with slackness.
The Columbia Records deal produced Vibes of the Times (1993), which contained "Nazerite Vow" and the title track — both accompanied by music videos and both showing that cultural dancehall had international commercial potential. The founding of Flames Productions in 1994 gave him creative independence, and Rebel Salute — initially held in Manchester, later at Richmond Park Estate in Saint Ann — grew from a birthday party into one of Jamaica's most important music events, drawing thousands to a no-alcohol, no-meat, roots-only celebration each January. He has collaborated extensively with artists including Capleton, Luciano, Garnett Silk, Sizzla and Beres Hammond. He donated his song "Not All About Money" to the United Nations Volunteers programme in 2001. He has given scholarships to students through the Rebel Salute Foundation.
