Capleton — The Prophet of Fire

Capleton - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Clifton George Bailey III on 13 April 1967 in the rural village of Islington, Saint Mary, Jamaica, Capleton is one of the most incendiary and spiritually driven artists in the history of reggae and dancehall music. Known by his followers as The Prophet, King Shango and The Fireman, he is widely credited — alongside Buju Banton and Sizzla — with spearheading dancehall's return to Rastafarian roots in the mid-1990s, a cultural shift that transformed Jamaican music and brought conscious fire back to the forefront of the genre.

Early Life & Kingston Beginnings:

As a child, Clifton Bailey earned the nickname Capleton from a respected local lawyer of the same name — the community recognized in young Clifton the same sharp verbal gifts and commanding presence. He grew up listening to Bob Marley and the Wailers, and to deejay legend Papa San, and sneaked into sound system shows from the age of twelve. At eighteen he left Saint Mary for Kingston, determined to make his mark on music. After performing on small sound systems, he landed a place with Stewart Brown's African Star — a combination sound system and label with connections in both Jamaica and Toronto. It was while performing in Canada with African Star alongside Ninjaman and Flourgon that he first became well known back home in Jamaica.

Rise, Transformation & Def Jam:

Capleton's early career was built on energetic, sometimes risqué dancehall hits — his debut single "Bumbo Red" was banned from Jamaican radio but spread by word of mouth, and his 1990 appearance at Reggae Sunsplash caused a sensation. But the pivotal moment came in the early 1990s when he converted to Rastafarianism. The transformation was complete and absolute. His 1992 single "Alms House" signalled the shift; from that point on, every lyric, every riddim and every performance was driven by the fire of spiritual conviction. His 1994 hit "Don't Dis the Trinity" made it unmistakable: the Prophet had arrived.

His 1995 Def Jam debut Prophecy — featuring hip-hop remixes of "Tour" and "Wings in the Morning" (the latter with Method Man) — made him a crossover success in the US. His 1997 follow-up I Testament continued the fusion of Rastafarian militancy with R&B accessibility.

The Fire Burns On:

Returning to VP Records, Capleton released what many consider his finest work: More Fire (2000), a career highlight packed with roots reggae anthems including "Who Dem?", "Jah Jah City" and "Good in Her Clothes". Still Blazin (2002) and Reign of Fire (2004) followed. True to his title of The Fireman, fire runs through his entire catalogue — not as a symbol of destruction, but of purification and spiritual renewal. His annual charity concert "A St Mary Mi Come From" has raised funds for schools and hospitals in his home parish every year since 2000.
