Judy Boucher — Can't Be With You Tonight
Introduction:
Born in St. Vincent in the Caribbean and raised in High Wycombe, England, Judy Boucher is a reggae and R&B singer who made history in 1987 as the first Caribbean female artist to achieve such a sustained run on the UK national singles chart. Her lovers rock anthem "Can't Be With You Tonight" — produced by Sonny Roberts in London — reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1987, spending 17 weeks in the chart including 14 weeks in the Top 75. It charted across Europe and became a massive hit in the Philippines. Her follow-up "You Caught My Eye" reached UK number 18. A stadium performance in Belgium drew 40,000 fans with lighted candles. An extraordinary talent, and an extraordinary story.
From St. Vincent to High Wycombe:
Judy Boucher grew up in St. Vincent before relocating to High Wycombe around 1970. She began performing with her brother Bruce's band, Judy Jack and the Beanstalk, entertaining audiences across south-east England through the 1970s. After stepping back from music to raise a family, she was persuaded to return to the studio by her friend Felix Da Silva — a songwriter who had produced sentimental love songs for artists including Tim Chandell and Joyce Bond. The result was "Dreaming of a Little Island" in 1985 — a number one on the UK reggae chart and subsequently adopted as the Jamaica Tourist Board's official theme tune. It was the beginning of a remarkable second act.

Can't Be With You Tonight & Global Success:
Her 1987 debut album Can't Be With You Tonight, produced by Sonny Roberts at his London studio, contained the title track that changed everything. With crystal-clear vocals and a yearning, steadfast rhythm, "Can't Be With You Tonight" crossed from the reggae scene into the British mainstream, spending weeks in the UK Top 10 and peaking at number 2. Grokipedia notes it made her the first Caribbean female artist to secure such an extended run on the UK national charts. The song became a lovers rock standard and a Caribbean diaspora anthem. Her follow-up "You Caught My Eye" reached UK number 18. She toured Belgium — performing to 40,000 fans in a stadium — then South Africa (where she was a chart sensation), before touring Swaziland, Namibia and several other African countries. She also toured the Middle East, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Her 1992 album Tears on My Pillow was recorded in Johannesburg.
