Red Rat — Oh No!

Red Rat - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Wallace Wilson (born 17 January 1978 in Saint Ann's Bay, Jamaica), known worldwide as Red Rat, is one of dancehall's most genuinely original and joyful performers — a comical, high-energy singjay whose signature catchphrase "Oh no!" and irresistible personality made him one of the genre's biggest stars in the late 1990s. He comes from a deeply musical family: his father was guitarist for Byron Lee & the Dragonaires, one of Jamaica's most celebrated bands; one older brother was bassist for Diana King; another drummed for the group KRU. His 1997 Greensleeves debut album Oh No... It's Red Rat became one of the label's best-selling records ever. His song "Tight Up Skirt" is one of the most sampled dancehall tracks of all time — Chris Brown used elements of it for his 2017 hit "Privacy", which passed 100 million Spotify streams. His 2017 collaboration "Higher" with DJ Buddha passed 21 million Spotify streams and was licensed by Zumba worldwide. He collaborated with TLC, Groove Armada, and Naughty by Nature.

From Hotel Stages to Greensleeves:

Growing up in the tourist town of Saint Ann's Bay, Wallace Wilson made his first stage appearance at four years old — dragged on stage at a hotel where his brothers were performing, he launched into a Michael Jackson "ABC" and the audience went wild. Music was in his blood. His brothers' music connections brought him to the attention of Danny Browne, producer and CEO of Main Street Records, who signed him at sixteen and mentored him alongside Main Street artists including Lady G, Papa San and Buccaneer. His first recorded appearance came as a guest on his brother's band KRU's track "Can't Live Without You" in 1995.

Two years of development followed before Red Rat took the stage at Teen Splash '96 and Sting — winning over both crowds completely. By the end of 1997 he had three Jamaican radio smashes and his debut album Oh No... It's Red Rat on Greensleeves Records, featuring "Shelly Ann", "Tight Up Skirt", "Big Man Little Yute" and "Cruise" (which appeared in the US film The Big Hit). His second album I'm a Big Kid Now (2000) brought further critical acclaim and hits. His diverse appeal led to collaborations with TLC, Groove Armada and Naughty by Nature's Treach. His later career continued to reach new audiences, with "Higher" becoming a global streaming hit in 2017 and "Tight Up Skirt" keeping him in the cultural conversation through high-profile samples.
