Spragga Benz — She Nuh Ready
Introduction:
Born Carlton Errington Grant on 30 May 1969 in Kingston, Jamaica, Spragga Benz is one of dancehall's most commanding, versatile and enduring deejays — an artist whose booming voice, elastic vocal delivery and instinctive lyrical intelligence have kept him at the forefront of the genre for over three decades. He grew up in the tough Franklin Town neighbourhood of Kingston, where his lanky physique earned him the nickname Spaghetti — later shortened to Spragga. His recording career began by accident in 1992, when Buju Banton — slated for four dubplate tracks at an L.A. Benz sound system session — voiced only two and told the young Spragga to freestyle the other two. The result became "Love Mi Gun". His debut album Jack It Up (1994) cemented his national reputation. His 1995 Capitol Records signing made him one of the first dancehall artists on a major American label. He collaborated with Foxy Brown, Nas, Lady Saw, Wyclef Jean, Stephen and Damian Marley. He acted in the landmark Jamaican crime film Shottas (2002). His 2019 album Chiliagon topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart — and was released after a decade away from music following the tragic death of his son. He was the first ever dancehall or reggae act invited for the Grammy Museum Experience Spotlight Series.
Franklin Town to Capitol Records:
The name Benz came from the L.A. Benz sound system that gave him his break — a fortuitous session that turned a freestyle into a career. After "Love Mi Gun", further hits arrived through collaborations with some of Jamaica's finest producers: "Could a Deal" (Winston Riley) and "Girls Hooray" (Steely & Clevie) established him as a name to reckon with nationally, and his 1994 debut album Jack It Up — featuring Wayne Wonder on "You Go Girl" — demonstrated the range that would characterise his career. The 1995 Capitol Records signing produced his second album Uncommonly Smooth, produced by Bobby Digital, Dave Kelly and Tony Kelly, featuring Ben E. King and Carla Marshall. His 2000 album Fully Loaded brought "She Nuh Ready Yet", one of his biggest and most enduring hits, alongside a collaboration with Lady Saw on "Backshot" and his first work with Foxy Brown on "Too Stoosh".
His transition into acting — first in Brooklyn Babylon (2001) then Shottas (2002, with Ky-Mani Marley) — gave him an international profile beyond music. He founded the Stay In School programme for needy students in Franklin Town, and later established the Carlyle Foundation in memory of his son Carlton Jr., providing scholarships and computers to Jamaican students. His comeback album Chiliagon (2019, Easy Star Records) debuted at Billboard Reggae number one, proving that three decades on, the voice remained irresistible.
