Vybz Kartel — World Boss
Introduction:
Born Adidja Azim Palmer on 7 January 1976 in Portmore, Saint Catherine, Jamaica, Vybz Kartel — the World Boss, the Teacha — is, as Billboard has written, the most influential Jamaican recording artist since Bob Marley. He has accumulated 1.58 billion official on-demand US streams. He mentored and launched Popcaan, Spice, Tommy Lee and Shawn Storm. He collaborated with Major Lazer, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes and Pharrell Williams. His 2010 single "Clarks" — with Popcaan — spent forty consecutive weeks in the top three North American reggae singles and sparked a nationwide spike in Clarks shoe sales in Jamaica. His "Pon de Floor" collaboration with Major Lazer became the sonic template for Beyoncé's "Run the World (Girls)". He was crowned Deejay of the Year at Stone Love's 30th Anniversary in 2002. He released five albums from prison that reached the top ten of Billboard's Reggae Albums chart. He was released from prison in July 2024 after thirteen years, following the quashing of his murder conviction by the UK Privy Council — Jamaica's highest court of appeal — and performed at his Freedom Street concert before the largest Jamaican audience in nearly fifty years. In January 2025 he returned to the US stage for the first time since his incarceration.
Portmore, Bounty Killer & The Making of a Dancehall Empire:
Adidja Palmer grew up in the tough Waterford district of Portmore and began writing music at eleven, absorbing the sounds of Ninjaman, Buju Banton and American rappers KRS-One and Will Smith. He was expelled from Calabar High School at sixteen but later graduated from a technical tutoring school. His first recording — "Love Fat Woman" (1993) under the name Adi Banton — was a teenage homage to Buju Banton. He co-founded the group Vybz Cartel with two friends in 1996, kept the name as a solo artist when the group dissolved, and became a protégé of Bounty Killer — writing songs for Bounty, Elephant Man and the Scare Dem Crew before breaking as a solo artist in 2002 with hits including "Guns Like Mine", "Badman" and "Most High". His 2003 debut album Up 2 Di Time (Greensleeves) gave him international reach, and his stage clash with Ninjaman at Sting that year — despite turning violent — made him the most talked-about artist in Jamaica.
After splitting from Bounty Killer's Alliance in 2006 he founded his own Portmore Empire label and signed a roster of artists that became the dominant force in Jamaican music. His string of releases through Greensleeves — More Up 2 Di Time (2004), J.M.T. (2005) — and then his own Adidjahiem/Notnice Records gave him complete creative control. His feud with Mavado divided Jamaican dancehall into Gaza (Kartel) and Gully (Mavado) factions that lasted years. Kingston Story (2011, Mixpak/Dre Skull) — released weeks before his arrest — was his most internationally praised album: the New York Times, The FADER and Dazed & Confused all featured him. He was arrested in September 2011 and convicted of murder in 2014. Even from prison he released five Billboard-charting albums including King of the Dancehall (2016, US Billboard #2). His release in July 2024 was a national event. He returned to recording immediately and is working on his first proper post-prison album.
