Shaggy — Boombastic

Shaggy - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Orville Richard Burrell on 22 October 1968 in Kingston, Jamaica, Shaggy is the only diamond-selling dancehall artist in music history — having sold over 40 million album units worldwide. He is a two-time Grammy winner (Best Reggae Album for Boombastic in 1996 and 44/876 with Sting in 2019), a Brit Award winner (International Male Solo Artist, 2002) and holder of the Jamaican Order of Distinction with the rank of Commander (2007). His 2000 album Hot Shot topped the US Billboard 200, was certified eight-times platinum by the RIAA, and spawned two number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 — "It Wasn't Me" and "Angel". He has received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Brown University. His annual Shaggy and Friends charity concert has raised over $100 million for Jamaica's Bustamante Children's Hospital. He is among the top three most-streamed reggae artists of all time on Spotify, alongside Bob Marley and Sean Paul.

Kingston to Brooklyn, Marines to Boombastic:

Growing up in Kingston, Shaggy earned his nickname from his resemblance to the Scooby-Doo character. He relocated to Brooklyn's Flatbush neighbourhood at eighteen, where he performed with the local Jamaica-style Gibraltar Musik sound system. In 1988, seeking stability and a way out of the harsh realities of street life, he enlisted in the US Marines — serving four years including two tours of duty in the Middle East during Operation Desert Storm. He later said the Gulf War inspired elements of "Boombastic". While still in the Marines, his studio sessions with New York reggae DJ/producer Sting (not the rock star) produced "Mampie" — a number-one on the New York reggae charts — and "Big Up".

His 1993 cover of the Folkes Brothers' ska classic "Oh Carolina" (using a Prince Buster-influenced dancehall update) topped charts worldwide and made him the first dancehall artist to perform in post-apartheid South Africa. His Grammy-winning Boombastic (1995) held number one on Billboard's Reggae Albums chart for thirty consecutive weeks — the longest reign in the chart's history — and made "Boombastic" the first platinum-selling dancehall album. Hot Shot (2000) then broke all records: topping the Billboard 200, selling eight million copies in the US alone, and putting "It Wasn't Me" and "Angel" at number one on the Hot 100. His 2019 collaboration with Sting, 44/876, won his second Grammy. His viral 2020 "Banana" with Conkarah passed two billion streams.
