Terror Fabulous — Action
Introduction:
Born Cecil Campbell on 20 December 1974 in Jamaica, Terror Fabulous is a dancehall deejay whose deep, commanding voice — so often compared to Buju Banton's that it became a talking point in itself — produced some of the most energetic and memorable recordings of the early 1990s dancehall golden era. He came to the music through a course in electrical engineering, which brought him into contact with producer Dave Kelly — one of the architects of 1990s Jamaican dancehall. His 1994 East West Records album Yaga Yaga — produced by Kelly — contained "Action" with Nadine Sutherland, a duet built on the Pepperseed riddim that peaked at number 43 on the US Billboard Hot 100, was ranked number 19 on Vibe Magazine's list of the Fifty Greatest Duets of All Time, was later used as a campaign dubplate by then-US Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris in 2020, and remains one of the most beloved duets in the history of Jamaican music. His 2000s single "Miss Goody Goody" featured Maxi Priest. He performed at Reggae Sunsplash in 1994. He has continued recording into the 2020s, releasing collaborative albums with Jigsy King, Louie Culture and Mega Banton.
Dave Kelly, Yaga Yaga & The Sound of '94:
Cecil Campbell's path into music was unconventional — it was his electrical engineering training, and the connections it brought, that introduced him to Dave Kelly, the Madhouse Records producer whose Pepperseed riddim became one of the defining rhythm tracks of the mid-1990s. His early singles "Gwaney Gwaney" and "Dorothy" established his name in Jamaica, leading to a deal with East West Records — the Atlantic subsidiary — and the 1992 debut album Gwaney Gwaney, produced by Patrick Roberts and Donovan Germain. The follow-up Yaga Yaga (1994, East West/Atlantic) was his commercial peak. "Action" — the call-and-response duet with Nadine Sutherland that declared "Action not a bag a mout'!" — crossed from the Jamaican market to the US urban mainstream, secured Billboard Hot 100 placement and international airplay, and became a cultural phrase embedded in Jamaican speech. Further hits "Miss Goody Goody" with Maxi Priest and "Number 2" kept him prominent. The same year's Bobby Digital-produced Terror (VP Records) addressed his Jamaican and UK audience directly.
His 1996 Greensleeves album Lyrically Rough closed out his peak decade, after which he stepped back from the spotlight for several years. He returned to performing in 2005 and has maintained an active career, collaborating with veteran dancehall peers and releasing new material consistently into the 2020s.
