Cutty Ranks — The Stopper
Introduction:
Born Philip Thomas on 12 February 1965 in Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, Cutty Ranks is one of the most uncompromising, influential and widely sampled voices in the history of dancehall music. His deep, gravel-toned baritone, militant lyrical stance and no-holds-barred delivery defined a pivotal era when Jamaican dancehall exploded beyond the island into hip-hop, jungle, reggaeton and global pop. With over 300 samples of his music by artists including Drake, The Fugees and Funkmaster Flex — and his track "A Who Seh Me Dun" alone carrying over 90 samples, making it the 8th most sampled reggae song in history — Cutty Ranks is not just a dancehall legend, he is a building block of modern music.
Sound System Roots & Kingston Rise:
Cutty Ranks began performing reggae on local sound systems at the extraordinary age of eleven, immersed in the pulse of Jamaican dancehall culture from the earliest years. By fourteen he was working with the Gemini sound system, before moving through Tony Rebel's Rebel Tone, Papa Roots, Stereo Mars, Arrows and Metro Media. He joined the legendary Killamanjaro sound system alongside Early B, Super Cat, Puddy Roots and Little Twitch — a baptism of fire that shaped his aggressive, confrontational style. His first job after leaving school was as a butcher, but the dancehall called louder.
His debut single "Gunman Lyrics" arrived in 1986 on Winston Riley's Techniques label, followed by "Out of Hand" and "Fishman Lyrics". Moving to Arrows and then Penthouse Records in 1990, he recorded alongside reggae greats Marcia Griffiths, Dennis Brown, Wayne Wonder and Beres Hammond. His fame spread quickly through the UK reggae scene.

The Stopper & Global Crossover:
In 1991 London's Fashion Records signed him and released his debut album The Stopper. The same year produced his defining anthems: "The Bomber", "A Who Seh Me Dun" and "Limb by Limb" — tracks that became instant dancehall classics. "Limb by Limb" became a foundational track in the UK jungle/drum'n'bass scene, helping to shape that genre's identity. His voice and style crossed into hip-hop through collaborations with American artists, establishing him as one of the first Jamaican acts to successfully bridge the cultures. Decades later his vocals resurfaced on El Chombo's viral "Dame Tu Cosita" — one of the most widely shared videos in internet history — and he has continued fighting for proper recognition and compensation for his contributions.
