Ras Shiloh — From Rasta to You

Ras Shiloh - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Thomas Williams on 6 January 1975 in Brooklyn, New York, Ras Shiloh is a conscious roots reggae singer whose extraordinary tenor voice — widely compared to the late Garnett Silk, his greatest inspiration — has made him one of the most deeply respected artists in the genre's global community. He is a Rastafarian by faith, raised with roots in North Carolina and Brooklyn, who relocated to Jamaica in the mid-1990s after establishing himself in New York's roots reggae circuit. His 2002 VP Records album From Rasta to You — produced by Donovan Germain at Penthouse and featuring a collaboration with Buju Banton on "Give I Strength" — introduced him to the widest international audience. His 2007 VP Records album Coming Home, produced by Bobby "Digital" Dixon, was praised as one of that year's finest roots reggae releases. Tony Rebel introduced him to Jamaican audiences in 1995, telling the Kingston crowd that here stood a successor to Garnett Silk.

Brooklyn, Ballys Sound & The Jamaica Connection:

Raised in Brooklyn to a family with North Carolina roots, Thomas Williams found his path through the New York reggae sound system scene, working alongside the Ballys International sound system. His early musical partnership with Ras Shaka and Knotty B led to his 1997 debut recording, initially singing "You Say You Love Jah" over the rhythm of Bob Marley's "Natural Mystic". Embracing Rastafarianism more deeply, he adopted the name Ras Shiloh and released his 1997 group album Ras Shiloh & Idrens Chants — which introduced his voice to the conscious roots community with tracks including "Time", "Jah Calling" and the combination "Caught Up In the Circle" with Shelene Thomas. His 1998 solo debut Babylon You Doom then launched him as a serious touring artist across California and the US West Coast.

His breakthrough hit "Are You Satisfied?" — recorded on the Lalabella riddim produced by Tony Rebel's Flames company in 1996 — became one of the soundtrack records for Jamaica's famous Reggae Boyz football team as they made history qualifying for the 1998 World Cup. Tony Rebel's personal endorsement and introduction in Kingston, citing him as Garnett Silk's spiritual successor, embedded Ras Shiloh deeply in the Jamaican roots community. His collaborative works have included Anthony B, Morgan Heritage, Jr. Kelly, Capleton, Lutan Fyah, Gentleman, Bascom X, Buju Banton and Duane Stephenson. He has performed at Rebel Salute, ReggaeJam Germany and stages worldwide.
