Merciless — The Warhead from Clarendon

Merciless - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Leonard Bartley (1 July 1971 – 19 July 2022), known to dancehall as Merciless — and to his most devoted fans as the Warhead — was one of the most gifted, spontaneous and feared lyricists in the history of Jamaican dancehall music. Born in the Turner district of Chapelton, Clarendon, he rose from virtual unknown to dancehall royalty in a single night in 1994, when Stone Love boss Winston "Wee Pow" Powell played his debut single at the House of Leo nightclub in Kingston and pulled it up nine times in a row. His 1995 hit "Mavis" — the top reggae single in Jamaica that year — was performed before a million-strong crowd at Notting Hill Carnival in London, introduced to the stage by Busta Rhymes. His legendary clash performance at Sting 2000, where he single-handedly defeated a combined force of Ninjaman, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man, remains one of the most talked-about moments in dancehall history. He died in July 2022, aged 51.

Chapelton to Kingston — One Night, One Song:

Growing up in rural Clarendon, Leonard Bartley made his way to Kingston and into the studio environment in the early 1990s, initially performing under the name Sugar Demus. In 1993 he recorded his first track at Penthouse Studios, which eventually became the debut single "Len Out Mi Mercy" — released on the Stone Love label in 1994. The night it was played at House of Leo, Wee Pow changed the artist's name from Sugar Demus to Merciless on the spot. Within weeks he was one of Jamaica's most talked-about new voices — a rapid-fire deejay with Bounty Killer's edge but his own completely distinct personality and an instinctive, theatrical lyrical wit.

His subsequent run of hits through 1994–97 — "Mavis", "Mama's Cooking", "War Zone", "Dorothy", "Greedy Fi More", "Gal Dem Gizzada", "Ole Gallis" — built a catalogue of over 300 commercial releases and 270 feature appearances. He collaborated with Lady Saw ("Baby Mother"), Bounty Killer ("No One Cares") and Beenie Man ("Mama"). He was one of the most sought-after artists for dubplates internationally throughout his career.
