Busy Signal — Dancehall Artist of the Decade

Busy Signal - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Reanno Devon Gordon on 24 January 1979 in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, Busy Signal is one of the most versatile, prolific and internationally celebrated artists in the history of contemporary dancehall. Named Dancehall Artist of the Decade at the 2020 International Reggae & World Music Awards, he has collaborated with Major Lazer, No Doubt, Damian Marley and Bounty Killer, appeared on Billboard charts in multiple countries and proved time and again that his rapid-fire delivery and melodic instincts make him one of the most distinctive voices Jamaica has produced in the modern era.

Early Life & Church Roots:

Growing up in Saint Ann and raised by a devoutly Christian mother, Busy Signal's first experience of music was singing church hymns — where he discovered his vocal talent and earned his very first encore from the congregation. His family later relocated to Kingston, moving between communities including Tivoli Gardens, Standpipe and Papine — volatile environments whose realities would feed directly into the gritty street narratives of his dancehall hits. As a teenager he would save his school lunch money to buy cassettes of popular music, absorbing everything from Madonna and Whitney Houston to Jay-Z and Eminem, beaten out on his school desk until teachers reprimanded him.

He was nicknamed "Busy Signal" by his friends for the simple reason that he was always busy — always working, always recording, always performing. The name stuck. He began his career voicing dub plates for the Renaissance and Kilimanjaro sound systems, and his early work caught the attention of dancehall legend Bounty Killer, who mentored him and gave him his first opportunity to perform before a Jamaican audience as part of The Alliance.

Breakthrough & International Success:

His 2005 self-produced breakthrough single "Step Out" was one of the most popular dancehall songs of that year, launching him into Jamaica's mainstream and earning him international recognition. His debut album followed on Greensleeves Records, and his 2008 VP Records album Loaded — characterised by its authentic street credibility and mesmerising vocal stream — became the gold standard for a new generation of dancehall artists. Hits including "Nah Go A Jail Again", "Tic Toc" and "Unknown Number" dominated Caribbean and US reggae airplay throughout 2007 and 2008.

His 2012 album Reggae Music Again — a conscious return to roots — was ranked number 7 in BBC Music's Top 25 Albums of the year. His collaboration with Major Lazer on "Watch Out for This (Bumaye)" became a hit single across multiple European countries. He also appeared on No Doubt's album Push and Shove. His 2019 album Parts of the Puzzle debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart — his highest ever chart position.
