Conroy Smith — The Man Behind Dangerous

Conroy Smith - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born in 1966 in Canterbury, Jamaica, Conroy Smith is one of the most distinctive and fondly remembered voices of the late 1980s digital dancehall era — an artist whose 1988 anthem "Dangerous" became one of the most instantly recognisable reggae songs of its generation. Perhaps unusually for reggae, his music gained unexpected fame far beyond the Caribbean when British world boxing champion Nigel "The Dark Destroyer" Benn adopted "Dangerous" as his ring entrance music — sending the track into millions of British living rooms through his celebrated fights against Chris Eubank and others. When Eubank's son Connor Benn later walked out to the same song decades later, it confirmed that "Dangerous" had become truly timeless.

From Canterbury to Kingston

Conroy Smith grew up immersed in sound system culture from an exceptionally early age — by the age of eight he was already deejaying for the local Observer sound system near his home in Canterbury. He built his musical skills through the dual routes common to so many Jamaican artists of his generation: the discipline of schoolwork and the raw education of the dancehall. At fifteen, he sang at school alongside the established Jamaican star Nadine Sutherland, who was sufficiently impressed to urge him to move to Kingston to pursue a professional career. It took five years for Conroy to act on that advice — a close and loving relationship with his mother made leaving difficult — but eventually, in his early twenties, he made the journey to Kingston.

The Digital Era & Dangerous:

Arriving in Kingston in the mid-1980s, Smith found himself at the heart of the digital revolution that was transforming Jamaican music under the influence of King Jammy and a new generation of producers. His debut track "Indian Lady" was released on George Phang's Powerhouse label on the celebrated Heavenless riddim recorded by Sly & Robbie. While it didn't become a major hit, it announced his unique singjay talent — a fluid blend of singing and deejaying that set him apart from his contemporaries. Over the following five years from 1985 to 1990, he released a long run of singles that built his reputation steadily across Jamaica and the UK reggae scene. His 1987 single "Original Sound" for King Tubby was a notable early success.

The pinnacle came in 1988 with "Dangerous" — released on the progressive Redman label on the Joyride riddim. Performed live at the legendary Sting '88 concert to a roaring crowd, the track's impactful bassline, hypnotic melody and Conroy's assured vocal performance made it an immediate classic. Nigel Benn's adoption of it as his entrance music introduced it to an entirely new audience across the UK, cementing its place in both reggae and British boxing folklore.
