Ghost — The Monster Shack Singjay

Ghost - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Carlton Hylton (born 1974 in Kingston, Jamaica), known throughout the reggae and dancehall world simply as Ghost, is one of the most distinctive and enduring singjay voices of his generation. Equally at home with smooth romantic ballads and hard dancehall riddims, he is revered for his raspy, deeply characterful vocal tone, his flawless cover versions and his contribution to Jamaican music as a founding member of the Monster Shack Crew alongside Roundhead and General B. His dancehall hit "Body Guard" remains one of his most recognisable tracks, and songs like "Do You Remember" and "Something Inside So Strong" cemented his place in Jamaican music history from the early 1990s onwards.

Kingston Beginnings & The Name:

Carlton Hylton grew up in Kingston before moving with his mother to Clarendon at age five. As a child, he was hit by a bicycle and spent time in hospital with his head in bandages — his friends, seeing him return looking like a ghost, gave him the nickname that would define his career. Back in Kingston as a young man, he began performing on sound systems as a teenager, entering the studio environment in 1989 with his first recording alongside DJ Culture, "Commercial Time", for producer Patrick Livingston. His first solo recording, "Killing Me Softly" for Patrick Roberts on the Punany riddim, followed shortly after.

Shocking Vibes, Monster Shack & The Hits:

In 1991 came breakthrough hits for Shocking Vibes — "Do You Remember" and "Something Inside So Strong" — two tracks that established his singjay credentials across Jamaica's dancehall scene. He toured with Shabba Ranks in 1992 and recorded "God Is Truly Amazing" as a duet with Beenie Man. Working closely with Roundhead and General B, the Monster Shack Crew was formed — one of the most cohesive and respected artist collectives of the 1990s Jamaican dancehall scene — releasing Scared from the Crypt in 1999.

His romantic side is equally celebrated: his smooth, emotive delivery on love songs has made him one of the most requested singjay artists for listeners who want dancehall with genuine feeling. "Wine" with Tony Curtis (1997), "What Have You Done" (1998) and his subsequent solo albums showcased a vocalist whose range and warmth set him distinctly apart. He has continued to record and perform well into the 2010s and 2020s, maintaining a devoted following across the Caribbean, UK and diaspora communities worldwide.
