Jah Cure — The Healing Voice
Introduction:
Born Siccature Alcock on 11 October 1978 in Hanover, Jamaica, Jah Cure is one of the most gifted and emotionally powerful reggae vocalists of his generation — a singer whose voice has been described by VP Records as "the greatest voice ever given to a human being", and whose extraordinary career has unfolded against a backdrop of personal trial and triumph that gives his music a depth and sincerity few can match. Named by Capleton, mentored by Beres Hammond, imprisoned at twenty years old and singing his way to Jamaican number ones from inside prison walls — Jah Cure's journey is one of the most remarkable in reggae history. His 2015 album The Cure debuted at number one on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. His 2019 album Royal Soldier also debuted at Billboard number one.
A Name, A Mentor & An Arrest:
Growing up in Hanover and then Kingston, Siccature Alcock was drawn to the great reggae icons from childhood — sneaking out to dancehalls and stage shows to watch Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Beres Hammond, Garnett Silk and Black Uhuru. His encounter with Capleton in Kingston led to him being given the name Jah Cure — the name reflecting both the young singer's healing vocal quality and his alignment with Rastafarian principles. His first major break came in March 1997 with the duet "King in This Jungle" with Sizzla, produced by Beres Hammond — who then became his mentor, guiding his early career and producing much of his work. In 1998, Cure toured Europe and the Caribbean with Hammond's Harmony House collective. His momentum was extraordinary.
In November 1998 he was arrested in Montego Bay, charged with gun possession, robbery and rape. In April 1999 he was sentenced to 15 years. Jah Cure always maintained his innocence. What followed was remarkable: from inside prison, he continued recording, and his music not only reached Jamaican radio but reached the top of the charts. His 2000 debut album Free Jah's Cure was lyrically compared to Bob Marley's Exodus. His 2003 album Ghetto Life — produced by Beres Hammond — featured the duet with Sizzla "Divide and Rule", voted best song of the year in Jamaica. The 2005 Freedom Blues compilation on VP Records gathered his prison recordings. He was paroled on 28 July 2007 after serving eight years.
