Sanchez — Loneliness
Introduction:
Born Kevin Anthony Jackson on 30 November 1964 in Kingston, Jamaica, Sanchez is reggae's King of Lovers Rock — a singer of extraordinary range, sensitivity and versatility whose voice has graced over twenty albums and whose catalogue spans church gospel, pop covers, dancehall rhythms and romantic reggae balladry across nearly four decades. He grew up in the Stony Hill and Waterford areas of Kingston, sang from early childhood in the Rehoboth Apostolic Church choir in Saint Catherine, and worked as a selector on the Rambo Mango sound system before music took hold of him completely. His 1988 Winston Riley-produced hit "Loneliness Leave Me Alone" was voted Song of the Year and Singer of the Year in Jamaica that same year and led to his first appearance at Reggae Sunsplash, where he received six encores. His version of Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You" became one of the most beloved reggae covers ever recorded. His 2000 album Simply Being Me reached number 14 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart; 2002's Stays on My Mind reached number 9. His "Frenzy" won him Songwriter of the Year in 2002.
From Church Choir to King of Covers:
Kevin Jackson grew up between Stony Hill and Waterford in Kingston, the church choir his first stage and his first musical education. He drifted toward the sound system scene in his teens, becoming a selector for Rambo Mango before his singing abilities drew the attention of producers. His 1987 debut single "Lady in Red" reached number 19 on the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation chart and sent producers scrambling. "Loneliness Leave Me Alone" the following year — produced by the legendary Winston Riley — was the record that established him as a national figure: Singer of the Year, Best Up and Coming Artist, Best New Artist and Song of the Year all in one twelve months. The Penthouse Records collaboration with Philip "Fatis" Burrell produced his 1989 album Number One, which contained his definitive cover of Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You" — a recording that would earn him fans worldwide.
Sanchez became known as a master of the cover version — transforming pop, soul, country and R&B songs into reggae vehicles with a naturalness and emotional intelligence that few in the genre have matched. Over twenty studio albums followed, working with producers including King Jammy, Bobby Digital and Donovan Germain. He released wholly gospel albums (Who Is This Man, 1999; He's Got the Power, 2003) alongside secular records, demonstrating a depth of commitment to both aspects of his artistry. His hits "One in a Million", "Pretty Girl", "Hello", "Fall in Love", "Amazing Grace" and "Frenzy" kept him at the top of the reggae lovers rock world across multiple decades.
