Duane Stephenson — From August Town

Duane Stephenson - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born on 22 April 1976 in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in August Town, Saint Andrew — the community that both shaped and inspired his music — Duane Stephenson is one of the most critically acclaimed roots reggae singers of the 21st century. His 2007 debut album From August Town was heralded by Billboard magazine as one of six albums "collectively galvanizing a roots reggae revival", and AllMusic called it "the best since Prisoner by Lucky Dube." With a poetic, nimble tenor voice, socially conscious lyrics and a deep artistic seriousness, Duane Stephenson has earned respect across Jamaica and the world as a genuine keeper of the roots reggae tradition.

August Town & The Road to Music:

Growing up in August Town — a Kingston community with a reputation for hardship but also for producing remarkable musical talent including Sizzla Kalonji — Duane was surrounded by music from childhood. His uncle Michael Rutherford, lead singer of the Riddim Kings band, began mentoring him through his pre-teen years. He attended Tivoli Gardens Comprehensive High School where he developed his vocal abilities in the school choir. In 1993 he joined Kathy Levy's Little People performing arts programme. He then spent eight years as lead vocalist of the roots reggae band To-Isis — an invaluable apprenticeship in craft, performance and songwriting.

His growing reputation as a songwriter attracted the attention of legendary saxophonist and producer Dean Fraser — one of Jamaican music's most respected figures, whose production credits span over 1,000 albums. Under Fraser's guidance, Duane contributed songs to artists including Morgan Heritage, Gyptian, Tarrus Riley, Etana, Jah Cure, Luciano, Beres Hammond and Alboro:sie before stepping forward as a solo artist.
