Morgan Heritage — Strictly Roots
Introduction:
Morgan Heritage is the Grammy Award-winning reggae band known as the Royal Family of Reggae — a sibling group formed in 1994 by five of the children of Jamaican reggae artist Denroy Morgan. Named Peetah, Gramps, Una, Lukes and Mr. Mojo Morgan, they grew up between Brooklyn, New York and Springfield, Massachusetts, raised in a household of music, faith and discipline that laid the foundation for one of the most enduring careers in contemporary roots reggae. Their 2015 album Strictly Roots won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2016. Their 2017 album Avrakedabra received a Grammy nomination. They have performed at Glastonbury, headlined major festivals across Africa, North America and Europe, and collaborated with Damian Marley, Sizzla, Capleton, Bounty Killer, Shaggy, Diamond Platnumz and Stonebwoy. They are, as Apple Music says, "perhaps the most dominant musical family this side of the Marleys."
From Brooklyn to Jamaican Roots:
Born the children of Denroy Morgan — the Jamaican-American reggae artist known for "I'll Do Anything For You" — the Morgan siblings were raised in a strictly musical and spiritual environment. Their father homeschooled them and ran their household like a music conservatory, with daily rehearsals and instrumental mastery as core requirements. Gramps mastered keyboard, Lukes guitar, Mojo percussion, while Peetah and Una developed the vocal harmonies that would define the group's sound. Their first public performance was at Jamaica's Reggae Sunsplash in 1994. They were subsequently signed to MCA Records and released their debut album Miracles that same year.
After the Sunsplash debut the family relocated to Jamaica, where they stripped back toward a purer roots reggae sound working with producers Bobby "Digital" Dixon and Lloyd James. Their 1999 album Don't Haffi Dread — which declared that wearing dreadlocks was not the only requirement for being a Rastafarian — became a cultural anthem. Its message resonated deeply with young and diaspora Jamaicans questioning received assumptions about identity and spirituality. Albums including More Teachings (2001) and Full Circle (2005) cemented their position as international reggae ambassadors. Their own label, CTBC (Cool to Be Conscious) Music Group, has given them complete creative and commercial independence.

Grammy, Global Stages & Loss:
Strictly Roots (2015) won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2016 — a historic win as one of the few self-produced independent bands to take the award. Avrakedabra (2017) received a further Grammy nomination. In February 2024, lead vocalist Peter "Peetah" Morgan died at the age of forty-six. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness called it a "colossal loss" for Jamaica and reggae music. The group continues with Gramps and Mr. Mojo, releasing their latest album Loyalty and remaining one of reggae's most active and beloved live acts.
