Sean Paul — Get Busy
Introduction:
Born Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques on 9 January 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica, Sean Paul is the most commercially successful dancehall artist in history and one of the most globally recognised Jamaican artists of any era. He played for Jamaica's national water polo team from age thirteen to twenty-one before choosing music over sport. His 2002 album Dutty Rock won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album, went double-platinum in the US, and sold over six million copies worldwide. Its single "Get Busy" — the first ever dancehall song to top the US Billboard Hot 100 — was also the first dancehall song to reach that summit. His 2005 "Temperature" from The Trinity also hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. He has been featured on Beyoncé's US number-one "Baby Boy", Sia's "Cheap Thrills", Dua Lipa's "No Lie", and Clean Bandit's "Rockabye". He has collaborated with J Balvin, Burna Boy, Gorillaz, Major Lazer and Ed Sheeran. He holds the Jamaican Order of Distinction (2019). After more than twenty years, he remains one of the world's most in-demand collaborative artists.
Water Polo, Producer Jeremy Harding & The Dutty Rock:
Sean Paul Henriques grew up in a family steeped in sporting and musical culture — his grandfather played on Jamaica's first national water polo team, his father competed for the team in the 1960s, and Sean himself played at national level into his early twenties. He attended Wolmer's Boys' School and studied commerce before music claimed him entirely. His path into recording began when producer Jeremy Harding heard about a singer at an open mic event who sounded like Super Cat. When Sean visited his studio to ask advice, he recorded a spontaneous vocal over a rhythm track and created "Baby Girl". Harding became his manager and producer. His early Jamaican hits "Deport Them", "No Bligh" and "Hot Gal Today" (with Mr Vegas) made him the highest-selling artist on VP Records before his debut album Stage One (2000) was even released. He had already appeared in Hype Williams' 1998 film Belly alongside DMX.
Dutty Rock (2002) changed everything — for Sean Paul personally and for dancehall music globally. "Get Busy" on the Diwali riddim was the first dancehall song ever to top the Billboard Hot 100. The album spawned four Top 15 Billboard hits including "Like Glue" and "I'm Still in Love with You" featuring Sasha. His partnership with Beyoncé on "Baby Boy" gave her a US number one simultaneously. "Temperature" from The Trinity (2005) repeated the trick — another Hot 100 number one. Eight studio albums followed through Scorcha (Island Records, 2022), with every era bringing new chart-topping collaborations across pop, EDM, Latin and dancehall.
