Buju Banton — The Voice of a Generation

Buju Banton - The Ultimate Collection - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Mark Anthony Myrie on 15 July 1973 in the Salt Lane area of Kingston, Jamaica, Buju Banton is one of the most significant and complex figures in the entire history of reggae and dancehall music. The youngest of fifteen children, descended directly from the Maroons of Jamaica, he rose from the Kingston ghetto to break Bob Marley's record for number one singles in a single year, win a Grammy Award, sign with Jay-Z's Roc Nation and fill Kingston's National Stadium with 30,000 fans on his triumphant return from prison in 2019. His journey is one of reggae's most extraordinary stories — of talent, transformation, controversy, redemption and resilience.

The Name & Early Career:

"Buju" was the nickname given to him by his mother — a Jamaican term for breadfruit, referring to his chubby build as a toddler. "Banton" — a Jamaican word meaning a gifted and respected storyteller — was adopted in tribute to his idol, the deejay Burro Banton, whose rough vocals and forceful delivery he grew up emulating. At just thirteen, Buju was already performing on local sound systems, and by fourteen had cut his first record "The Ruler" for producer Robert Ffrench. His breakout hit "Stamina Daddy" followed shortly after.

Record-Breaking Success:

By 1992, at just nineteen years old, Buju Banton had released two albums — Stamina Daddy and Mr. Mention — with the latter becoming the best-selling album in Jamaican music history at the time of its release, breaking all previous records including those set by Bob Marley and the Wailers. That same year he broke the Jamaican record for most number one singles in a single year — another Marley record. He signed with Mercury Records in 1993 and released Voice of Jamaica, which contained the safe-sex track "Willy Don't Be Silly" — donating all profits to a Jamaican HIV/AIDS children's charity.

Spiritual Transformation:

By the mid-1990s, Buju underwent a profound spiritual transformation, embracing Rastafarianism and shifting his music decisively toward roots reggae and conscious themes. The 1995 album 'Til Shiloh — recorded with live musicians rather than digital production — is widely regarded as one of the greatest reggae albums of all time. It featured the timeless "Champion" and "It's All Over" and signalled a new artistic maturity. Inna Heights (1997) and Unchained Spirit (2000) followed in the same vein, cementing his status as one of reggae's most important voices.

Grammy & Legacy:

His 2010 album Before the Dawn won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards. After serving a prison sentence in the United States from 2011 to 2018, Buju returned to Jamaica and launched his Long Walk to Freedom tour — opening with a sold-out concert at Kingston's National Stadium before 30,000 fans. His 2020 comeback album Upside Down 2020 was released on Roc Nation and entered the charts worldwide. Named Reggae/Dancehall Artist of the Decade at various awards ceremonies, his influence on every generation of Jamaican artists since the 1990s is immeasurable.
