Freddie McGregor — Big Ship

Freddie Mcgregor - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Fredrick McGregor (born 27 June 1956, Clarendon, Jamaica) is one of the most durable, soulful and beloved singers in the history of Jamaican music — an artist whose career has spanned an astonishing six decades, from his debut at Studio One as a seven-year-old child to his Grammy-nominated albums as an elder statesman of roots reggae. AllMusic calls him "seminal" and "one of reggae's most durable and soulful singers." Founder of Big Ship Records, mentor to generations of Jamaican artists, session drummer, producer and hitmaker — Freddie McGregor has worn every hat in Jamaican music with grace, consistency and distinction.

Little Freddie at Studio One:

Freddie McGregor was seven years old when he first walked into Coxsone Dodd's legendary Studio One in 1963, joining Ernest Wilson and Peter Austin to form The Clarendonians — one of Jamaica's beloved early vocal groups. He was known as "Little Freddie" and even at that age his gifts were unmistakable. When The Clarendonians split in the mid-1960s, he stayed at Studio One, spending much of the 1970s as a session drummer, backup singer and developing artist — singing lead for groups like Generation Gap and Soul Syndicate, and writing original material including early songs like "Go Away Pretty Woman" and "Tomorrow Is Like Today". His conversion to Rastafarianism in 1975 had a profound effect on his music, and his classics "Rastaman Camp" and "I Am a Rasta" announced his new direction with conviction.

Bobby Babylon & Big Ship:

His 1980 Studio One album Bobby Babylon was a smash hit in Jamaica — a mixture of new material and reworkings of older singles that revitalised both McGregor's career and Coxsone Dodd's production fortunes. The following year's single "Big Ship" — one of reggae's most enduring anthems — catapulted him to the front rank of reggae stars in the immediate post-Marley era alongside Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs. His UK hit "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely" entered the British Top 10. In 1983 he founded Big Ship Records, which became a launching pad for artists including Papa San, Lieutenant Stitchie and Luciano. He also produced Judy Mowatt's celebrated solo debut Black Woman.

His album Anything for You earned a Grammy nomination. In 2022 he suffered a stroke, but by March 2025 had made a remarkable recovery — regaining the ability to walk unaided and returning to live performance. His son Stephen "Di Genius" McGregor is one of Jamaica's most celebrated dancehall producers, and son Chino is a recording artist in his own right — the McGregor dynasty continues.
