Richie Spice — Earth a Run Red
Introduction:
Born Richell Bonner on 8 September 1971 in Rock Hall, Saint Andrew, Jamaica, Richie Spice is one of the most deeply respected conscious roots reggae singers of his generation — a Rastafarian artist whose burning conviction, golden voice and unflinching social commentary have made him one of the genre's most compelling figures since the mid-2000s. He comes from one of Jamaica's most extraordinary musical families: his older brothers are Pliers (of Chaka Demus & Pliers, "Murder She Wrote"), Spanner Banner ("Life Goes On") and Snatcha Lion. His 2004 single "Earth a Run Red" became what the New York Times called the biggest reggae hit of the year — despite having first appeared on his 2000 debut album four years earlier. His Spice in Your Life album was named one of the ten best albums of the year by the Los Angeles Times — across all genres. His 2007 VP Records album In the Streets to Africa reached number 6 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. His hit "Youth Dem Cold" peaked at number 59 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was included on Vibe Magazine's Best Songs of the Year. "Youth Dem Cold" also appeared in the soundtrack of Grand Theft Auto IV.
A Family of Artists & A Song That Changed Everything:
Richell Bonner grew up surrounded by music — his brother Spanner Banner was the first to bring him to a recording studio, an experience that revealed how much work was required to meet professional standards. He persevered, eventually connecting with veteran producer Clive Hunt, who produced his breakthrough single "Grooving My Girl" — a warm, infectious lovers rock tune that remains one of the most beloved songs in his catalogue. It appeared on his 2000 debut album Universal (Heartbeat Records), alongside the track that would define his career: "Earth a Run Red". The song sat largely unpromotted for four years until Kingston management company 5th Element signed him in 2004 and mounted a vigorous campaign in Jamaica. The result was seismic — the song rose to the top of the Jamaican charts and crossed internationally, reestablishing roots reggae as a chart force. VP Records rereleased Spice in Your Life in 2006 and the partnership with VP produced three of his finest albums.
He has also won Male Singer/Singjay of the Year at Jamaica's IRIE FM Awards, was ranked by Billboard Magazine among the top six performers at Reggae Sunsplash 2006, and has toured the world repeatedly as one of reggae's most commanding live performers. He runs the Bonner Cornerstone label with his brothers and dedicates a proportion of his performance proceeds to Food For the Poor Jamaica.
