Sizzla — Black Woman & Child

Sizzla - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Miguel Orlando Collins on 17 April 1976 in Kingston, Jamaica, Sizzla Kalonji is one of the most prolific and spiritually driven artists in the history of reggae — a Rastafarian of the Bobo Ashanti order whose volcanic output, commanding singjay style and unwavering consciousness have made him one of the genre's most distinctive and influential voices for over thirty years. He has released over 56 solo albums — an extraordinary figure even by Jamaica's prolific standards. His 1997 album Black Woman & Child — produced by Bobby "Digital" Dixon — is widely regarded as one of the finest conscious reggae albums of the 1990s, earning him his first MOBO Award nomination for Best International Reggae Artist and placement on several year-end best-album lists. Billboard wrote in 1997 that his vocal abilities were "reinventing reggae singjay style." He has 21 albums that have charted on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart. His The Messiah (2013) received a Grammy nomination in 2014. He runs his own Kalonji Records and established Judgement Yard — a community centre, studio and record label base in August Town, Kingston.

August Town, Xterminator & The Conscious Flame:

Growing up in the August Town neighbourhood of Kingston — which he has never left and where he continues to operate his community infrastructure — Miguel Collins was raised by devout Rastafarian parents and shared their faith deeply. He studied mechanical engineering at Dunoon High School but music was always his true calling. After honing his skills on the Caveman Hi-Fi sound system, he was introduced to saxophonist Dean Fraser, the musical director for producer Philip "Fatis" Burrell's Xterminator label — the same label that had mentored Buju Banton. The same connection that launched Buju's career launched Sizzla's. His 1995 debut single and subsequent album Burning Up (RAS Records) — produced by Fattis Burrell — introduced him to the world. Praise Ye Jah (1996, Jetstar) followed.

Then came the Bobby Digital-produced Black Woman & Child (1997, Greensleeves) — an album that raised the bar for conscious reggae and earned Sizzla his first international recognition. Its title track became a cultural anthem. A cascade of albums followed: twelve between 1997 and 2001 alone, covering the full range of dancehall and roots styles. He worked with producers including Donovan Germain, Dave Kelly and Jack Scorpio. His Words of Truth reached the highest Billboard Reggae chart position of any of his albums. He has collaborated with artists across the reggae and hip-hop spectrum including Mobb Deep, Luciano, Anthony B and Morgan Heritage.
