Frisco Kid — Roots From West Kingston

Frisco Kid - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Stephen Wray in West Kingston, Jamaica, Frisco Kid is one of the most authentic and enduring voices of 1990s Jamaican dancehall and roots reggae — an artist who came up the hard way through Kingston's sound system culture, survived the streets, and built a career through genuine talent and determination. From his early deejaying days at school through his work with the legendary Shocking Vibes crew, Penthouse Records and Buju Banton's Cell Block 321 label, Frisco Kid earned his place in Jamaica's musical firmament with hits including "Big Speech", "Wakey News", "Yuh And Yuh Man" and "Step Up in Life."

West Kingston Roots:

Stephen Wray began deejaying at Kingston Secondary School as a teenager in the late 1980s, performing on small sound systems in the Port More area where he lived. The path was hard — earning a living from music in Kingston meant navigating a world where only the strong survived, and Wray navigated it with his eyes open. In 1989 a chance meeting with Mr. Wong, promoter of the famous Back Line party, put him in front of the Exodus Nuclear sound system — it was there he first performed under the name Paro Kid, and began visiting studios regularly.

Moving to Arrows studio in 1992 brought him into contact with a new generation of Kingston artists including Roundhead, Spragga Benz, General B and Baby Wayne. His first break came at the Black Scorpio studio in 1993. A session confusion with Terror Fabulous brought him to Penthouse Records — Jamaica's premier label — where he recorded "Big Speech", his breakthrough track. The hits that followed — "Wakey News", "Yuh And Yuh Man", "Tribulation", "Yuh A Boom" and "Step Up in Life" — built his reputation as one of dancehall's most compelling storytellers.
