Gyptian — Hold Yuh

Gyptian - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Windel Beneto Edwards on 25 October 1983 in King Weston District, rural Saint Andrew, Jamaica, Gyptian is one of the most internationally successful Jamaican reggae artists of the 21st century. His 2010 single "Hold Yuh" became a worldwide crossover phenomenon — reaching the Billboard Hot 100, charting in the UK at number 16, spending 29 weeks on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart, receiving a remix from Nicki Minaj and Major Lazer, and being named by Billboard as generating more American attention for an underground reggae artist than any since Wayne Wonder's "No Letting Go." At the 2010 Soul Train Music Awards he was named Best Reggae Artist.

From Church to Conscious Roots:

Growing up in rural Saint Andrew to a Seventh-day Adventist mother and Rastafarian father, Gyptian received his musical calling at seven years old — singing in his mother's church. His parents, recognising his talent, introduced him to Mr. Wong, a Portmore record producer. He initially paid little attention, but when his family dropped him at the studio one day and left, something clicked. Under the guidance of Mr. Wong and legendary guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith — Bob Marley's guitarist — Gyptian honed his sound, winning the 2004 Star Search talent competition in Portmore and earning a slot at the legendary Sting 2004 show.

His debut single "Serious Times" — a roots reggae plea for an end to violence, built around hypnotic nyabinghi drums — exploded across Jamaica, topping the charts and prompting a wave of producer interest. Gyptian refused most offers, holding firm to his conscious, roots-oriented vision. His musical and lyrical style was frequently compared to Sizzla, Luciano and Beres Hammond. His 2006 debut album My Name Is Gyptian on VP Records confirmed him as one of Jamaica's most exciting new voices.
