Half Pint — Greetings

Half Pint - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Lindon Andrew Roberts on 11 November 1961 in the Rose Lane enclave of West Kingston, Jamaica, Half Pint is one of the most culturally significant and musically gifted singers of Jamaica's 1980s dancehall golden era. From the same streets that produced Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Peter Tosh, Lee "Scratch" Perry and Toots Hibbert, Half Pint's explosive vocal delivery and deeply conscious lyrics made him a giant of reggae music whose influence extended far beyond Jamaica. His 1986 signature anthem "Greetings" — recorded in a single take, backed by Sly & Robbie — became a defining track of the raggamuffin era. His song "Winsome" was covered by The Rolling Stones (renamed "Too Rude") on their 1986 album Dirty Work. His song "Loving" was covered by Sublime for their 1996 album. Half Pint's reach is extraordinary.

Sound System Roots & The Rise:

Half Pint began singing in the school choir at All Saints' Primary School in West Kingston, and upon finishing secondary education in 1976 threw himself into the Jamaican music industry. He toured the island with sound systems including Black Scorpio, Jammys, Gemini, Lee's Unlimited and Killamanjaro — the premier platforms of the era — earning a reputation as one of the most powerful and dynamic vocalists performing live. His debut single "Sally" (1983), produced by Errol Marshall, was an immediate Jamaican hit. The follow-up "Winsome" reached number one in Jamaica — and its quality was recognised by The Rolling Stones, who covered it in 1986, with Keith Richards on vocals.

His run of hits through the mid-1980s was remarkable: "Mr. Landlord", "Level the Vibes", "Money Man Skank" and "Substitute Lover" all found audiences across Jamaica and the UK reggae scene. But "Greetings" in 1986 was the pinnacle. Described by Half Pint himself as a spiritual message — "greetings to all the ragamuffins from Jah, the most high, the creator" — it was recorded on the Heavenless riddim in a single take and became his most celebrated and enduring track. Its release on Powerhouse Records helped universalise the term "raggamuffin" itself.
