Junior Reid — One Blood

Junior Reid - One Blood - The Best OF (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Delroy Reid on 6 June 1963 in Kingston, Jamaica, Junior Reid is one of the most distinctive, versatile and internationally connected vocalists in the history of reggae and dancehall — a man who grew up in the notorious Waterhouse district of Kingston, recorded his first single at thirteen for the late great Hugh Mundell, fronted the Grammy-nominated Black Uhuru, and wrote and recorded "One Blood" — the 1989 reggae anthem whose universal message of human unity resonated so powerfully that it became a cross-generational classic, was sampled by The Game for a 2006 US Billboard number one, was referenced by Vampire Weekend as the inspiration for their album title, and has been covered and referenced by artists from Wu-Tang Clan to Alicia Keys.

Waterhouse to Worldwide:

Growing up in Waterhouse — a West Kingston district known for its resilience as much as its danger — Delroy Reid was shaped early by both the hardship and the music around him. At thirteen, introduced to the legendary singer Hugh Mundell, he recorded his first single "Speak the Truth", released on Augustus Pablo's Rockers International label in Jamaica and popular as an import in the UK. After Mundell's tragic murder, Junior recorded for Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion label and King Jammy's studio, building a string of hits including "Boom Shak-a-Lak", "Bank Clerk" and "Higgler Move". He formed his own band the Voice of Progress, whose Mini Bus Driver album was a local success. His reputation was rising fast.

Black Uhuru, One Blood & Hip-Hop Crossover:

In 1986, Black Uhuru — the first group to win a Grammy in the reggae category — asked him to replace departing lead singer Michael Rose. Junior Reid fronted Black Uhuru on three albums: the Grammy-nominated Brutal (1986), Positive (1987) and Black Uhuru Live in New York (1988), touring Europe, the US, Canada and Bermuda. He left in 1988 to rebuild his solo career, establishing his own JR Productions label and One Blood Recording Studio. His 1988 UK hit "Stop This Crazy Thing" with Coldcut reached number 21. His 1990 collaboration with The Soup Dragons on "I'm Free" reached UK number 5.

His 1989 anthem "One Blood" — written in response to the political gang violence tearing Kingston apart — became a worldwide reggae classic and an enduring message of unity. The Game's 2006 single "It's Okay (One Blood)" sampled it and hit the top of the US Billboard charts. His vocals also appeared on Wu-Tang Clan's The W album and with Guru on Jazzmatazz. Junior Reid remains actively touring and recording, a true Living Legend of Jamaican music.
