Terry Ganzie — Welcome the Outlaw

Terry Ganzie - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Vandorne Johnson in Hanover, Jamaica, Terry Ganzie — the Original Outlaw — is a roots dancehall deejay whose fiery Rastafarian consciousness, uncompromising reality lyrics and powerful delivery made him one of the most respected artists of the early 1990s Jamaican music scene. Influenced by Barry Brown and Super Cat, he emerged through the Penthouse Records and Bobby Digital camps — the two dominant forces in early 1990s dancehall — and is widely regarded as the deejay who, alongside Buju Banton, revitalised producer Donovan Germain's Penthouse label at the critical moment when it became one of the most important imprints in the world. His breakthrough anthem "Welcome the Outlaw" — produced by Lloyd "John John" James — set the tone for a career built on truth-telling, consciousness and dancehall energy. His album Heavy Like Lead (Profile Records/Atlantic) is considered his finest work. He performed at Reggae Sunsplash in 1994. He has continued to record and perform into the 2020s and remains one of the most respected veteran voices in dancehall.

Hanover, Penthouse & The Outlaw Crew:

Vandorne Johnson grew up in Hanover, a parish on Jamaica's north-west coast not traditionally associated with dancehall music, absorbing the influences of veteran singers Barry Brown and Super Cat and the wider Kingston sound system culture. His path into professional music came through the Penthouse Records orbit, where producer Donovan Germain — coming off his international success with Audrey Hall and Freddie McGregor — was building a new generation of dancehall artists around Buju Banton. Ganzie, Wayne Wonder and Buju Banton recorded in combination, and when Banton signed with Mercury Records all three appeared together on a superb interpretation of Little Roy's "Tribal War". His debut album Team Up — produced by Bobby Digital — introduced him to the dancehall world. His 1993 Outlaw Nuff Reward (John John Records) consolidated his reputation.

Emerging from Banton's considerable shadow, Ganzie proved his independence with a string of hits including "Showdown", "Heavy Like Lead", "Ragga Ragga" (Bobby Digital), "Whosoever Will", "Prepare fi War" (Shocking Vibes) and "Fly Away Home" — which topped the Jamaican charts in 1995. His mid-1990s Outlaw Crew — inspired by his own outlaw persona — brought newcomers Ritchie Melody, Rapper Richie and Wayne Sample into dancehall. He has never stopped recording: new singles and collaborative albums with Jigsy King, Louie Culture and Mega Banton have kept him visible into the 2020s, and his 2024 single "We Rise" reached international audiences through its message of Black unity and resilience.
