Wayne Wonder — No Letting Go

Wayne Wonder - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born Von Wayne Charles on 26 July 1972 in Buff Bay, Portland, Jamaica, Wayne Wonder is one of the most naturally gifted and versatile vocalists in the history of Jamaican music — a singer and songwriter who began recording at thirteen, mentored under King Tubby, co-wrote some of Buju Banton's most important early songs, and finally broke through to global audiences in 2003 with the Atlantic Records single "No Letting Go" — one of the most beloved recordings in dancehall and reggae fusion history. "No Letting Go" reached number three on the UK Singles Chart and number eleven on the US Billboard Hot 100, riding the Diwali Riddim produced by Steve "Lenky" Marsden — the same infectious rhythm that drove Sean Paul's "Gimme the Light" and became the foundation for Rihanna's breakthrough "Pon de Replay". Apple Music has written that Wayne Wonder "deserves a large share of the credit for popularizing" the fusion of Jamaican rhythms and international pop. His No Holding Back album (Atlantic Records, 2003) received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album and three BMI Urban Awards, and he performed the album live on NBC's Saturday Night Live and Today show. He has toured North America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Africa. His 2007 VP Records album Foreva reached number six on the US Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart.

Buff Bay, King Tubby & The Songwriter Behind Buju:

Von Wayne Charles grew up in Portland and later Kingston, taught to sing by his mother who sang in the church choir and inspired by Beres Hammond, Dennis Brown, Michael Jackson and Boyz II Men. He began writing songs at thirteen and caught a career break when he was given a regular weekly slot at Metro Media in Allman Town. His audition at Sonic Sounds studio impressed Sly Dunbar — who was touring with Black Uhuru — enough that Dunbar recommended him to King Tubby. Under Tubby's production, his 1985 debut single "Long and Lasting Love" launched him locally. Three further recordings followed before Tubby's murder in 1988 set him back temporarily. He regrouped with producer Lloyd Dennis for "It's Over Now" and his debut album before joining Donovan Germain's Penthouse Records in 1989.

At Penthouse he became one of the label's most important behind-the-scenes figures — his songwriting pen producing many of Buju Banton's early career hits including the controversial "Boom Bye Bye" and "Bonafide Love", the 1992 duet with Buju that became one of the first dancehall crossover records of that era. His own Jamaican and Caribbean hits through the 1990s — "Schizophrenic", "Da Vibe" — built an audience that was ready for his Atlantic breakthrough. The No Holding Back sessions were done partly at his own home studio in the US and partly in Jamaica, with Tony Kelly and Sly Dunbar among the producers. He gave Steve "Lenky" Marsden his first car — a two-door Civic — in exchange for the Diwali Riddim track that became "No Letting Go". His 2004 cover of the Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now" for the 50 First Dates soundtrack was produced by No Doubt's Tony Kanal for Madonna's Maverick Records label.
