Barrington Levy — The Mellow Canary of Reggae

Barrington Levy - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Barrington Ainsworth Levy (born 30 April 1964) is one of the most enduring and beloved voices in the history of Jamaican music. Known as the "Mellow Canary of Reggae", his voice is at once loud and lilting — a natural crooner whose talent was apparent from his earliest teenage years on the dancehall circuit. From his explosive breakthrough in the late 1970s through to his Grammy nomination in 2016 and a landmark appearance on the Gorillaz track "Meanwhile" in 2021, Barrington Levy has never stopped being relevant. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked him at number 119 on their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Early Life & Breakthrough:

Born in West Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in the rough Waterhouse neighbourhood and in Clarendon, Levy grew up inspired by local reggae heroes like Dennis Brown alongside American R&B artists like the Jackson 5. As a young teenager he formed a band called the Mighty Multitude with his cousin Everton Dacres, and they cut their first single "My Black Girl" in 1977. The following year, at just fourteen years old, Levy launched his solo career — and though his debut single made little commercial impact, his presence in the dancehalls was electric. His breakthrough came when he met producers Henry "Junjo" Lawes and Hyman "Jah Life" Wright, who took him into King Tubby's studio with the Roots Radics backing band. The results were immediate — a string of massive hits including "Collie Weed", "Englishman", "Skylarking" and "Looking My Love" that established Levy as one of Jamaica's brightest new stars

The 1980s — Peak Dancehall Dominance:

The 1980s belonged to Barrington Levy. He released an astonishing volume of hit material across multiple labels simultaneously — a testament to the insatiable demand for his voice. His 1984 UK album Here I Come took Britain by storm and his title track entered the UK Top 50. That same year he won the Best Vocalist prize at the British Reggae Industry Awards — and made history as the first reggae artist to simultaneously hold both first and second place in the reggae charts, earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. His signature hit "Under Mi Sensi" (1984) with producer Jah Screw became one of the defining dancehall tracks of the decade. He performed at Reggae Sunsplash every single year from 1987 to 1995 — a record of consistency that few artists can match.

Reinvention & Continued Success:

Rather than fading as dancehall evolved, Levy reinvented himself repeatedly. His 1998 album collaboration featuring Bounty Killer and Snoop Dogg showed his ability to bridge reggae and hip hop. His Acousticalevy album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album in 2016. In 2021, his appearance on the Gorillaz track "Meanwhile" introduced him to an entirely new generation of global listeners. He headlined the West Holts stage at Glastonbury in 2023.
