Black Uhuru — First Reggae Grammy Winners

Black Uhuru - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Black Uhuru are one of the most important and influential groups in the entire history of reggae music. Formed in the Waterhouse district of Kingston, Jamaica in 1972, they made history in 1985 by winning the first ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album — a category created specifically to honour reggae's growing global impact. With their landmark album Red ranked at number 23 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s, and record sales second only to Bob Marley in reggae history, Black Uhuru's legacy is extraordinary.

Origins & Formation:

The group was founded by Derrick "Duckie" Simpson — the one constant across every incarnation of the band — alongside Don Carlos and Garth Dennis. They initially recorded as "Uhuru" (the Swahili word for freedom), releasing a cover of The Impressions' "Romancing to the Folk Song". After Don Carlos and Garth Dennis each departed to pursue other projects, Simpson rebuilt the group, eventually adding Michael Rose on lead vocals and Sandra "Puma" Jones — a social worker from South Carolina who had worked as a dancer for Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus. This lineup — Simpson, Rose and Jones — became the classic Black Uhuru, and their partnership with legendary rhythm section Sly & Robbie took them to heights few reggae groups have reached before or since.

The Classic Era — 1980s

Working with Sly & Robbie, Black Uhuru developed a sound unlike anything else in reggae — heavy drum and bass, sharp keyboards, long instrumental passages with whirling echo effects and their signature "woh oh oh" harmonies. They signed to Island Records, began touring internationally and opened shows for the Rolling Stones and The Police — extraordinary crossover achievements for a reggae group. Keith Richards played guitar on their track "Shine Eye Gal".Albums like Sinsemilia, Red, Chill Out and Anthem cemented their status as global reggae heavyweights. Red was named one of Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s, and Anthem won the first ever Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 1985. They remain the only reggae group to have won the Diamond Awards of Excellence (1994) and have received six Grammy nominations in total.

Continuing Legacy:

Despite numerous lineup changes over the decades — including a period fronted by Junior Reid — Black Uhuru have never stopped recording or touring. In 2012 they were honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award and given the Key to the City of Las Vegas, with 31 August officially declared Black Uhuru Day. In 2018 their album As The World Turns received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album, with Duckie Simpson taking lead vocals for the first time across an entire album.
