Bounty Killer — The Poor People's Governor

Bounty Killer - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Rodney Basil Price OD (born 12 June 1972), known worldwide as Bounty Killer, is one of the greatest and most influential dancehall lyricists of all time. Born into poverty in Kingston, Jamaica, shot by a stray bullet at fourteen, and rising to become a Grammy Award winner who collaborated with No Doubt, Wu-Tang Clan, The Fugees, Busta Rhymes and Barrington Levy — his journey is one of the most dramatic in the history of Jamaican music. Voted the Guinness Greatest Dancehall Icon in 2012, Bounty Killer has shaped the sound and direction of Jamaican music for over three decades.

Origins & The Name:

Bounty Killer grew up in deep poverty — one of nine children whose family at one point lived near a Kingston rubbish dump before moving to the housing communities of Riverton City and Seaview Gardens. Despite these beginnings, music was in his blood from early. His father ran the Black Scorpio sound system, and Bounty began deejaying at nine years old on local sound systems, honing a delivery that would eventually make him one of the most electrifying MCs in dancehall history. At fourteen, he was caught in the crossfire of a politically motivated gunfight and shot. Convalescing in hospital, he adopted the name Bounty Killer — a name that would come to define an era. Before fully committing to music, he worked in the assets management branch of the Bank of Ireland — a detail that speaks to the breadth of the man behind the artist.

Breakthrough & Dancehall Dominance:

Bounty Killer's breakthrough came in 1992 with "Coppershot" — a track so raw and confrontational that producer King Jammy initially refused to release it. His brother Uncle T recognised its power and helped get it out, and it became a hit in Jamaica and beyond. A string of hard-hitting singles followed, and his rivalry with Beenie Man — which began in 1993 after accusations of style theft — became one of the defining storylines in 1990s dancehall, captured on the clash album Guns Out (1994).As the Jamaican government cracked down on violent lyrics, Bounty Killer broadened his music to include powerful social commentary. "Down in the Ghetto" confronted political corruption and inner-city deprivation head-on, earning him the title "The Poor People's Governor" from Jamaican communities who saw him as a genuine voice for the marginalised.

International Recognition:

His 1996 album My Xperience was a landmark — featuring collaborations with The Fugees, Busta Rhymes, Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan and Barrington Levy. The duet with Levy, "Living Dangerously", became a nightclub staple worldwide. The album spent six months on the Billboard reggae chart and two months at number one on the Billboard R&B chart. In 2002, his collaboration with No Doubt on "Hey Baby" won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group — making Bounty Killer one of the very few hardcore dancehall artists to win a Grammy. The single sold over a million copies. His album Ghetto Dictionary: The Mystery received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. In 2014, he and long-time rival Beenie Man finally buried the hatchet and recorded "Legendary" together — a moment that reggae fans had waited twenty years to see.
