Frankie Paul — The Jamaican Stevie Wonder

Frankie Paul - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Paul Blake (19 October 1965 – 18 May 2017), known to the world as Frankie Paul, was one of the most prolific, joyful and beloved voices in the history of Jamaican dancehall and reggae music. Born blind in Kingston, his sight was partially restored by surgery on a hospital ship during childhood. He attended a Salvation Army school for the blind where he learned to play multiple instruments, and when Stevie Wonder visited the school in 1975 and heard the young Paul Blake sing, Wonder was so impressed that he encouraged him directly to pursue a professional career. Frankie Paul took that advice and spent the next three decades recording more than 40 albums, working with virtually every major producer in Jamaica, and bringing an exuberant full-throated warmth to reggae that NME described as "sheer exuberance." He has been called "The Jamaican Stevie Wonder" — and while he developed his own distinctive nasal, throaty style entirely his own, the comparison speaks to the extraordinary quality of his gift.

Rise Through the Dancehall:

Frankie Paul released his first single "African Princess" in 1982, and his debut album Give the Youth a Chance followed shortly after. He was quickly claimed by the dancehall scene as one of its most exciting new voices — his 1983 hit "Worries in the Dance" was one of the era's defining tracks, and the ganja anthem "Pass the Tu-Sheng-Peng" became a beloved classic. His love songs "Sara" and "Casanova" showed the romantic depth beneath his dancehall energy, while comic gems like "Alesha" (whose immortal line "all she feed 'pon is french fry and hamburger" became one of reggae's most quoted moments) showed his wit.

While some singers were wrong-footed by reggae's transition to digital production in the mid-1980s, Frankie Paul stepped into the new era with complete authority. His prolific output — sometimes five or more albums a year — placed him alongside virtually every major Jamaican producer of the period. He worked with Joe Gibbs, Junjo Lawes, King Jammy, George Phang, Philip "Fattis" Burrell and many more.
