Lucky Dube — Africa's Greatest Reggae Voice

Lucky Dube - Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Lucky Philip Dube (pronounced doo-bay; 3 August 1964 – 18 October 2007) was the greatest reggae artist Africa has ever produced — a South African musician whose voice could span three octaves, whose Zulu cultural heritage merged with Jamaican reggae to create something wholly original, and whose anti-apartheid message connected the struggles of Black South Africans with the liberation theology at reggae's heart. He recorded 22 albums in English, Zulu and Afrikaans across 25 years. His 1993 album Victims sold over one million copies worldwide. He was named Best Selling African Recording Artist at the 1996 World Music Awards. He toured with Peter Gabriel, Sting, Sinéad O'Connor and Michael Jackson. He was murdered in a Johannesburg carjacking in 2007. He was forty-three years old.

From Ermelo to the World:

Born in Ermelo, Mpumalanga (then Eastern Transvaal), Lucky Dube was raised in poverty, largely by his grandmother, while his mother relocated to find work. He discovered music through his school choir and found his first band, The Skyway Band. He recorded his first mbaqanga (Zulu pop) album in 1981 as part of The Love Brothers, signing with the Teal Record Company. Through the early 1980s he released several mbaqanga albums — but it was his encounters with the music of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff that changed everything. He saw in Jamaican reggae's socio-political message a direct parallel with the experience of Black South Africans under apartheid: "Reggae is the one and only way of reaching the masses," he said.

His first reggae album Rastas Never Die (1984) was immediately banned by the South African apartheid regime. Undeterred, he returned to the studio. His 1985 follow-up Think About the Children went Platinum and established him as South Africa's dominant reggae artist. His 1987 album Slave — built on African drums, electric organ and brass, backed by the twelve-piece ensemble known as the Mothers of Soweto — made him an international star. Prisoner (1989) went double-platinum in South Africa in five days. His 1991 appearance at Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica earned him a 25-minute encore — a remarkable tribute from reggae's home crowd.
