Popcaan — Unruly Boss
Introduction:
Born Andrae Hugh Sutherland on 19 July 1988 in Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica, Popcaan — the Unruly Boss — is the most internationally successful Jamaican dancehall artist of his generation. Signed to Drake's OVO Sound and Warner Records, his collaborations span Drake, Young Thug, Gorillaz, Jamie xx, AlunaGeorge, Pusha T, French Montana and Jay-Z. He was the only Jamaican artist included on Rolling Stone's 50 Best Songs of the Year for 2017, for his contribution to Gorillaz's "Saturnz Barz". He has won the MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act two years in a row — the only dancehall artist ever to achieve that. He opened for Drake on his Boy Meets World European tour in 2017. He founded his own label, Unruly Entertainment, and his annual Unruly Fest in his Saint Thomas birthplace has hosted legends from Bounty Killer to Drake alongside rising Jamaican talent. AllMusic calls him a "genre-bending Jamaican dancehall singer equally popular among fans of reggae, hip-hop, and electronic dance music."
Portmore, Vybz Kartel & The Unruly Rise:
Growing up in the Gangsta City housing scheme in Portmore — a rough environment he has spoken about candidly — Andrae Sutherland was shaped by music from childhood, singing in his grandmother's church. In 2007 he approached Vybz Kartel at a local jam called "My Scheme" and Kartel invited him to join his Portmore Empire music group. Kartel became his producer and mentor, taking the young artist to major stage shows including Sting and Reggae Sumfest. His 2010 collaboration with Kartel and Gaza Slim on "Clarks" — an ode to the famous British shoe brand — caused a nationwide spike in Clarks sales in Jamaica and won Dancehall Song of the Year at the EME Awards. His nickname "Popcaan" was given to him by his close friend Scumpy, who died to street violence in Portmore.
His 2012 single "Only Man She Want" marked his first Billboard chart entry. In 2013 he signed with Mixpak Records, and his 2014 debut album Where We Come From — executive produced by Dre Skull — entered the Billboard Reggae Albums chart at number 2 and introduced him to the global pop consciousness. The Gorillaz collaboration "Saturnz Barz" came next, then the Drake signings, then OVO Sound. His 2020 mixtape Fixtape featured Drake, PARTYNEXTDOOR and others. His 2023 album Great Is He on OVO Sound debuted at Billboard Reggae number 3.
