Ambelique — The Soul of Lovers Rock

Introduction:

Born Owen George Anthony Silvera around 1956 in Waltham Park, Kingston, Jamaica — the same neighbourhood that produced Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor and Sugar Minott — Ambelique is a reggae singer with one of the most remarkable and unconventional stories in Jamaican music. A man who walked away from music to work as a bank clerk in California, only to return years later and score some of the most soulful lovers rock hits of the 1990s, Ambelique is living proof that genuine talent cannot be silenced forever.

Early Career & Ramon The Mexican:

Ambelique's story in music began not as a singer, but as a deejay. In the late 1960s he joined Derrick Harriott's legendary "Musical Chariot" sound system under the name Ramon the Mexican, and recorded with Harriott's band The Crystallites on the album The Undertaker. The track featured Ambelique and Harriott performing a playful parody of the spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars, mimicking dialogue between Clint Eastwood and an undertaker. Both The Undertaker and its sequel The Overtaker later appeared on a Trojan Records release.

Life in America & The Long Road Back:

After relocating to the Bronx in New York, Ambelique linked up with Hugh Hendricks and the Buccaneers, where he performed alongside a young Bunny Rugs — later of Third World — on an extensive US tour. By 1976, with family commitments pressing, he took the pragmatic decision to step back from music and build a career in banking in California. For over a decade he supported himself this way, never abandoning music entirely but keeping it at arm's length. As he has said, describing his hero Sam Cooke and Solomon Burke as his biggest influences: the soul was always there, waiting.

Comeback & Sly & Robbie:

In 1989 Ambelique returned to music full time, and by 1994 had forged a career-defining partnership with Sly & Robbie — Jamaica's most celebrated rhythm section and production duo. Together they recorded a string of hits including "Quando Quando", "Penny Lover" (a reggae version of the Lionel Richie classic) and a version of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" — notably featuring Keith Richards himself on guitar. His debut album Ambelique Sings The Classics showcased his remarkable ability to transform beloved pop and soul songs into deep, convincing reggae and lovers rock performances. His hits "Lonely Soldier", "Stick To The Task" and "Soldier On The Front Line" proved his success was no fluke.
