Bob Andy — The Songwriter's Songwriter

Bob Andy - A Tribute To (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Keith Anderson CD (28 October 1944 – 27 March 2020), known the world over as Bob Andy, was one of the most gifted and respected singer-songwriters in the entire history of reggae music. Widely regarded as reggae's most influential songwriter, his songs have become standards recorded and revered by generations of artists — from Marcia Griffiths and Ken Boothe to Barrington Levy and beyond. His life story, from a deeply troubled childhood to an internationally celebrated career, is one of reggae's most extraordinary personal journeys.

Early Life & The Paragons:

Born in Kingston in October 1944, Bob Andy's childhood was marked by instability and hardship. After his grandmother died, he was passed between adoptive parents, subject to beatings, and eventually made a ward of the state at Maxfield Park children's home. It was there that he taught himself to play piano and began singing in the Kingston Parish Church choir — the first steps on a remarkable artistic journey. As a teenager, Bob co-founded The Paragons — one of the most celebrated rocksteady vocal groups in Jamaican music history — alongside Tyrone Evans, Howard Barrett and later John Holt. The group recorded for Coxsone Dodd's Studio One, scoring hits including "Love At Last", penned by Bob himself. Working closely with legendary Studio One musician Jackie Mittoo, he developed the songwriting craft that would define his career.

Solo Hits & Songwriting Genius:

Bob Andy's solo breakthrough came in 1966 with "I've Got to Go Back Home" — a song that became an anthem for Jamaicans at home and in the diaspora. A string of hits followed including "Going Home", "Unchained", "Feeling Soul", "My Time", "The Ghetto Stays in the Mind" and "Too Experienced" — tracks that have become reggae standards covered countless times by other artists. As a songwriter for others, his contribution is equally remarkable. He wrote "Feel Like Jumping", "Truly", "Melody Life" and "Fire Burning" for Marcia Griffiths, and "I Don't Want to See You Cry" for Ken Boothe. His song "Too Experienced" was covered to great success by Barrington Levy, and "My Time" by the same artist. His 1992 hit "Fire Burning" won the JAMI Award for Song of the Year.

Young, Gifted and Black:

In the early 1970s, Bob teamed up with Marcia Griffiths to record as Bob & Marcia, scoring a massive international hit with their version of Nina Simone's "Young, Gifted and Black". The single sold half a million copies in the UK and Europe, and the pair toured with Elton John and Gilbert O'Sullivan. In 1983, Bob returned to the UK charts with the number one single "Honey" and a number one album Friends. In 1997 he was named one of music's "Living Legends" at the Reggae/Soca Awards in Miami. The Jamaican government awarded him the Order of Distinction in 2006. He performed at the Bob Marley 60th birthday concert in Addis Ababa in 2005 to a crowd of several hundred thousand people. Bob Andy passed away on 27 March 2020, leaving behind a body of work that will endure for generations.
