Tarrus Riley — She's Royal

Introduction:

Born Omar Riley on 26 April 1979 in the Bronx, New York, and raised in Jamaica, Tarrus Riley is the most celebrated second-generation roots reggae singer of his era — the son of veteran reggae artist Jimmy Riley (of The Uniques and The Techniques), a Rastafarian, and a vocalist whose warm, nuanced tenor has been described as one of the finest in contemporary reggae. His 2006 VP Records album Parables — produced by saxophonist Dean Fraser with Sly & Robbie on rhythm — was cited by Billboard Magazine as "the quintessence of Jamaica's roots reggae revival." Its single "She's Royal" won almost every Jamaican music award for which it was eligible throughout 2007–2008, including a clean sweep of six trophies at Jamaica's inaugural Reggae Academy Awards. It was voted Jamaica's Most Admired Song in the Past 15 Years at CVM TV's 15th Anniversary Awards in 2009. His 2014 VP Records album Love Situation — a tribute to the rocksteady era produced by Dean Fraser — debuted at number one on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. He was featured on Major Lazer's "Powerful" with Ellie Goulding from their 2015 album Peace Is the Mission. His 2020 collaboration "Lighter" with Rvssian and Shenseea became one of the biggest Caribbean hits of that year.

Son of a Singer, Student of Music:

Omar Riley grew up between the Bronx, South Florida and Jamaica, immersed in music through his father's career. He began his musical life as a deejay — initially under the name Taurus, suggested by his mother after his birth sign — before his passion for songwriting drew him fully toward singing. He recorded his earliest singles as a teenager for his father Jimmy's Love & Promotion label. His transition was guided by Dean Fraser — Jamaica's most celebrated saxophonist and one of its finest producers — who became his producer, bandleader and musical mentor, and who has remained central to his career across two decades.

His 2004 debut album Challenges (Yaman Records, later reissued by VP in 2008) — produced by Dean Fraser — yielded Jamaican hits including "Barber Chair" and "Take Me Higher" and introduced him as a serious and distinctive voice. Parables (2006) then elevated him from promising newcomer to major artist. Billboard's praise of the album as the quintessence of the reggae revival was no exaggeration — Fraser's production combined Nyabinghi roots tradition with contemporary sensibility, and "She's Royal" became an anthem for women across the Caribbean and beyond. His 2009 album Contagious featured Damian Marley, Vybz Kartel, Etana, Konshens and Demarco. He won the Jamaica Observer Artiste of the Year award in 2007 and multiple EME Awards in 2011.
