Collie Buddz — Bermuda's Reggae Phenomenon
Introduction:
Born Colin Patrick Harper on 21 August 1981 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised from the age of four in Bermuda after the death of his father, Collie Buddz is the most internationally successful reggae artist in Bermudian history — and one of the most distinctive voices in the modern reggae scene. A Columbia Records-signed debut album that entered the Billboard 200, multiple Billboard Reggae Albums chart number ones, a Grammy nomination, headline slots at Lollapalooza and Outside Lands, and collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes and Bounty Killer — his career has been one of reggae's genuine modern success stories.
From Bermuda to Billboard:
Growing up immersed in Bermuda's Caribbean musical culture, Collie credits his older brother Matthew for first introducing him to dancehall and reggae. After graduating high school he studied audio engineering at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida — graduating top of his class in 2006, a technical grounding that would prove invaluable to his later self-produced work. His demo track "Come Around" spread virally through the European, UK, US and Jamaican reggae scenes before he had even formally released it — rapper Busta Rhymes cut an unauthorised remix that pushed it onto urban American radio. Guest vocals on a Beyoncé "Ring the Alarm" remix then opened the door to Sony/Columbia Records.
His self-titled debut album arrived in 2007 on Columbia and debuted at number one on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. It included the singles "Come Around", "Blind to You" and his breakthrough radio hit "Mamacita" which sold approximately four million copies. He also contributed to Shaggy's album Intoxication that year, and his track "SOS" became the entrance theme for WWE superstar Kofi Kingston.

Independence, Evolution & Grammy Recognition:
After leaving Sony, Collie founded his own label Harper Digital and took full control of his music and production. His 2017 album Good Life — featuring Snoop Dogg, P-Lo and Kat Dahlia — peaked at number one on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. His 2019 self-produced album Hybrid topped the same chart and entered the Billboard 200 at number 70. His 2023 album Take It Easy was nominated for Best Reggae Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards. His Cali Roots Riddim series — annual compilations featuring the global reggae-rock community — have been widely acclaimed, with the 2020 edition reaching number 7 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Over 15 million listeners follow him on Spotify.
