Early B — The Doctor

Early B - The Doctor - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Earlando Arrington Neil (28 February 1957 – 11 September 1994), known to Jamaica and its diaspora as Early B — and to his closest associates as The Doctor — was one of the most gifted, culturally conscious and beloved deejays of reggae's golden era. A master storyteller whose lyrics elevated the art of toasting to genuine folk poetry, he scored major Jamaican hits with "Visit of King Selassie", "History of Jamaica", "One Wheel Wheelie", "Sunday Dish" and "Gateman Get Fraid" — tracks that placed four of his songs in JBC radio's top 100 for 1984 alone. He was also the man who first mentored and performed alongside a young Wild Apache — later the legendary Super Cat — making Early B a figure of immense historical importance to dancehall's entire evolution.

Origins & The Name:

Born into a poor Kingston family, Earlando Neil left school at seventeen to support his mother and two brothers, initially working as a machine clerk before being elevated to acting supervisor within a year. Music was always his calling, and he began performing live on the Soul Imperial Hi-Fi sound system. His reputation for arriving at every show early — never keeping a crowd waiting — earned him first the nickname "Early Bird", then "Early B". The name stuck, and with it, the professionalism it implied.

On the Soul Imperial sound, Early B took the young William Maragh (later Super Cat, "Wild Apache") under his wing as his apprentice. Together they moved to King Majesty sound in Saint Thomas, before frustration with the owner's seasonal absences drove them both toward bigger ambitions. Their chance came with Killamanjaro — a sound system rising in the hills above Kingston that would become one of Jamaica's greatest. In 1980–81, Early B and Super Cat were the engine of Killamanjaro's rise, and the nickname "The Doctor" was added to Early B's growing legend.

Recording Career & Legacy:

His storytelling approach to the art of toasting was unlike anything that had come before. Songs like "Send In the Patient", "Sunday Dish", "One Wheel Wheelie" and "Gateman Get Fraid" were social observations delivered with comedic timing, narrative detail and genuine affection for Jamaican life. His cultural tracks — "History of Jamaica" and "Visit of King Selassie" — showed a deeper, more scholarly side that set him apart from contemporaries. He recorded several albums in the mid-1980s, working across the US and England as well as Jamaica, and performed on the African Star sound system in Toronto and Crystal Blue Flames in New York City.

On 11 September 1994, Early B was shot while performing alongside Brigadier Jerry at the Windsor Cricket Club in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He died that night. His killers were never found. Tribute compilation albums including Immortal and A Memorial Tributed Reggae Hits have kept his music alive, and his influence on every storytelling deejay who followed him — from Super Cat to Bounty Killer — remains profound.
