Mavado — The Gully God

Mavado - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Born David Constantine Brooks on 30 November 1981 in the Cassava Piece community of Kingston, Jamaica, Mavado — known as the Gully God — is one of the most commercially successful and internationally connected Jamaican dancehall artists of the 2000s. Mentored by Bounty Killer, whose Alliance crew he joined, Mavado built a career through gritty, authentic storytelling rooted in his inner-city Kingston upbringing. He was awarded the MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act in 2008. Rolling Stone named him Best Reggae Artist in 2008. He signed to DJ Khaled's We the Best Music Group (a Cash Money/Republic Records imprint) in 2011. He appeared on Drake's "Find Your Love" video. He featured on G-Unit's T.O.S. album alongside Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks — the only non-G-Unit feature on that record. His singles "Real McKoy" and "Weh Dem a Do" became anthems across Jamaica, the Caribbean and urban radio worldwide.

Cassava Piece, Bounty Killer & The Rise:

Growing up in Cassava Piece — a tough uptown Kingston community — David Brooks was introduced to music through his grandmother's church. His peers admired Bounty Killer, and when Bounty Killer heard the young Brooks and brought him under his wing, it set the trajectory for everything that followed. Under Bounty Killer's guidance and with manager Julian Jones-Griffith, he adopted the name Mavado — inspired by the Swiss watchmaker Movado, with the spelling altered. His debut single "Real McKoy" on the Anger Management Riddim was an instant hit across Jamaica, the Caribbean and the US. But his breakthrough came with "Weh Dem a Do" — which peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart and announced him internationally.

His "Gully" identity — representing the Cassava Piece side of Kingston in dancehall's defining rivalry with Vybz Kartel's "Gaza" — made him one of the most talked-about artists in Jamaica during the late 2000s. His 2007 VP Records debut album Gangsta for Life: The Symphony of David Brooks contained the tracks "Real McKoy" and "Last Night" — both featured on Grand Theft Auto IV's in-game radio. He collaborated with Jay-Z, Akon, Wyclef Jean, Jah Cure, Rick Ross and Flo Rida, building the cross-genre profile that led to his 2011 We the Best signing.
