Thriller U — Waiting For You
Introduction:
Born Eustace Adolphus Hamilton on 14 August 1969 in Kingston, Jamaica, Thriller U is a reggae singer-songwriter whose warm, soulful voice and ability to move between deep roots, lovers rock and old-school dancehall have made him one of the most quietly beloved artists of the late 1980s and 1990s Jamaican music scene. He grew up between Kingston and Spanish Town, Saint Catherine, where his interest in music and songwriting began to develop at school. Originally nicknamed "Baby U" for his youth, his performances thrilled audiences so completely that the name became "Thriller U". His 1988 album Waiting For You — with its title track — reached number one in the UK. His "Juggling" topped the Jamaican Top 40 charts. In 1989 he was honoured as Best New Singer of the Year at the Jammy Annual Awards. He worked with producers King Jammy, Donovan Germain and Ossie Hibbert. His covers of George Michael's "Careless Whisper" and Jennifer Rush's "The Power of Love" demonstrated a vocal versatility that his peers genuinely admired. In the mid-1990s he co-founded the vocal supergroup L.U.S.T. — Love, Understanding, Sensitivity and Trust — with Singing Melody, Tony Curtis and Lukie D. He has continued performing and recording across four decades and remains a favourite on the roots reggae circuit.
Spanish Town, King Jammy & The Voice That Thrilled:
Eustace Hamilton attended Spanish Town Secondary School in Saint Catherine, where music became his dominant passion. His path to recording came through the Kingston studio circuit of the late 1980s — one of the most competitive musical environments in the world — but his natural vocal gifts set him apart from the start. His debut album Young Single and Fresh (1987) introduced him without major fanfare. The follow-up Waiting For You (1988) was the breakthrough: its title track reached number one in the UK and established him as an international name at just nineteen years old. Further collaborations with King Jammy — Jamaica's most powerful producer of the digital dancehall era — consolidated his position, and his "Juggling" demonstrated that he could also deliver the energetic, dance-floor-oriented side of Jamaican music with authority.
His collaboration with Donovan Germain at Penthouse Records and his work with Ossie Hibbert broadened his range further. His cover versions — particularly "Careless Whisper" and "The Power of Love" — revealed a singers' singer: someone who approached every lyric as a craft challenge and whose voice added emotional dimensions that were entirely his own. His L.U.S.T. project with Singing Melody, Tony Curtis and Lukie D in the mid-1990s — aimed at revitalising conscious lovers rock — produced harmonies of exceptional quality and brought him to new audiences. He has also collaborated with Jigsy King, Louie Culture and Mega Banton in later career work, and released gospel material alongside secular recordings.
