Culture — Two Sevens Clash

Culture - The Best Of (DOWNLOAD) - Chinchilla Choons

Introduction:

Culture are one of the most important and celebrated groups in the history of roots reggae — a Jamaican vocal trio whose 1977 debut album Two Sevens Clash became one of the defining records of the entire reggae canon. Named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the "50 Coolest Records" in 2002 — the only single-artist reggae album to make the list — Two Sevens Clash was a work of extraordinary prophetic power that influenced punk rock as deeply as it did reggae, resonating with John Lydon, The Clash and a generation of UK artists seeking music with real conviction and fire. At the time of the first Rolling Stone Record Guide, they were the only act of any genre whose every recording received five stars.

Joseph Hill — Keeper of Zion Gate:

Culture's story is inseparable from the life of its founder, lead vocalist and principal songwriter Joseph Hill (1949–2006), born in Linstead, Saint Catherine Parish, Jamaica, into a Christian family that sang in church from his earliest years. He taught himself to make musical instruments as a child, became a sound system deejay, and by the late 1960s was performing as a percussionist for the Soul Defenders at Studio One — backing such legends as Burning Spear and Dennis Brown. His first recording as a lead singer came in 1972 with the single "Behold the Land".

In 1976, Hill formed Culture — initially called the African Disciples — with his cousin Albert Walker and Kenneth Dayes. The timing was perfect. Rastafarianism was at the height of its cultural influence, and Jamaica was wracked by political violence. Hill had a prophetic vision to share, and the voice and the words to share it.

Two Sevens Clash & Global Impact:

Working with producer Joe Gibbs and engineer Errol Thompson (the "Mighty Two"), Culture recorded a series of extraordinary singles culminating in "Two Sevens Clash" — a Rastafarian vision of apocalypse rooted in a prophecy by Marcus Garvey that chaos would descend when the sevens met on 7 July 1977. The song created genuine public anxiety: many Jamaican businesses and schools closed their doors on that day. In the UK, the emerging punk rock movement seized on its raw power — John Peel championed it on BBC Radio 1 and it reached number 60 on the UK Albums Chart. The Clash and Public Image Ltd acknowledged its influence directly. Virgin Records signed the group and released their second and third albums internationally.

Culture performed at the legendary One Love Peace Concert in 1978, toured the US, Europe and Africa, and collaborated with Sly & Robbie, Robbie Shakespeare and the cream of Jamaican session musicians. Through the 1980s and 1990s they continued releasing acclaimed albums on Shanachie and Ras Records. Joseph Hill died on stage in Berlin in August 2006 during a European tour, and was eulogised by Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller. His son Kenyatta Hill stepped in to complete the remaining nineteen shows of the tour — an act of extraordinary devotion — and has led Culture ever since.
